Well I think you only realize that you want a relationship with a fuck buddy when someone else enters their life.
Once you know they are not exclusive to you and have the freedom to be with someone you might get the urge to say wait a minute I wanna be more.
As for looking for a relationship outside, honestly for me, I've been single my whole life a relationship doesn't really appeal to me especially if it's fake. If I'm gonna commit it's gotta be worth it, otherwise the sex part is all I care about. If I had a fuck buddy then sex is taken care of it would have to be someone very special for me to actually consider stepping into a relationship, and therefore automatically ending the fuck buddy arrangement.
Ideally, I'd have a relationship, but sometimes you just can't find a suitable person, or sometimes your situation isn't very relationship-friendly, but you still have needs and desires. That's where fuck-buddies or friends with benefits come into play.
But it's pretty well understood that if your situation changes, and you are in a situation where you can have a relationship instead, most people will choose the relationship, and most fuck-buddies will understand that choice.
I’d rather have a romantic relationship. Fuckbuddies are for when you can’t get that. They do the trick for a night, but really it’s just not enough. I’m not in a relationship and I fuck around sometimes I guess because I get lonely, and then I feel a little better, but inside I still just want someone to sleep next to at night and go grocery shopping with.
I'd only have a fuck buddy if I wasn't in a relationship or if the person I was in a relationship knew and approved of it.

But our unwritten rule is if either of us are in a romantic relationship we revert to being non-sexual friends, but each of us have been especially happy to have other comfort the other when those romantic relationship have come to an end
