I think you know the answer for you since you've been doing it for years without issue. It can be a problem for some but not for others, and clearly you fall in the latter category. My girlfriend and I have done it in the past and she did get an infection once and we haven't done it since. If you do get an infection there are over the counter medications that will clear them up pretty quickly.
