Maybe it has to do with pheromones... Those are hormones that are excreted outside of the body and give information to others. Humans have degraded this ability and don't really notice them anymore, at least not consciously. You can see it in animals though. For example when a dog meets another dog and they smell each other they get information about the other dogs gender, age, situation etc.
There are sexual pheromones too, so if you live with your partner or spend a lot of time together then it might be that he picks it up, without even noticing...
