I think you should trust the person first. And realize that your pictures may still be shared. So make sure you cannot be identified from them. If your trust gets stronger and you consider the risk low and the reward high, you may show your face. I have sent and received nudes that have the face showing, and years later I know I have never shared any I received, and fully trust that none I have sent have been shared.
I think that young people should not be doing it. At least in the US, sending or receiving youth erotica is illegal and can ruin your life.
As to the whys, of course we know that men are visual and love seeing them, so women often send for that reason. But many women also get aroused visually, even from guys they do not know. Many women have made it clear on here that they enjoy receiving male nudes, or even just the dick pictures.
For the women who send, in addition to trying to please the guy they are involved with (in some way), there are many women who are aroused and enjoy the act of showing themselves. It is just a way of enjoying sexual expression, and does not say anything bad about the woman.

I think it's one of the bad decisions one can take. Sharing nudes requires a big amount of trust. I don't think anything in particular about girls who share nudes, but they should be careful about their privacy over online content sharing.
