  • As a Massage Therapist for over 20 years, my take on this might be a bit different.

    It depends on my goal for my massage. If I know that someone is more expert in a given modality (type) of massage, I will go to them, male or female. When I needed some comparatively focused work, I went to one of my massage teachers- a guy- because I knew this was one of his areas of highest expertise. When my daughter developed knee problem, I had her see him rather than the ortho guy who just wanted to cut up her knee. (She is doing fine with no surgery which was put as a 50/50 chance or helping).

    If I am going for a relaxation massage- aka Swedish or "spa " massage- I will typically go with a female because- on a whole- female therapists will usually have smoother, more flowing presentation of their massage strokes.

  • @ahhang, I saw the question, but I didn't want to answer... If it's ultimately necessary to get a massage, I would prefer to get it from a male. The reason is the same as by QueenOfBaku.

  • Mmmm, I would say a man.

    Cause from my previous examinations or massages being handled by a female. Sure they have soft hands, but they put way too much pressure than it needs to be. That it sometimes causes discomfort.

    That from a male, they already have strong hands and are more gentle when touching.

    • Two other possible reasons about the females' touch feeling "heavy", both being related. 1. Female fingers are typically more slender, therefore, a given amount of pressure- especially when doing "point work" can feel more intense since it is concentrated in a smaller area than with males' fingers. 2. Ditto for their whole hand when doing effleurage since mens' hands are bigger than those of women. Here's an example: Let's say that two therapists- one male and one female- each press with 35 pounds of pressure (easily doable by either). A female hand can be as small as 20 square inches of less. We do the math to find that she would be applying 35/20= 1.75 PSI of pressure. A male hand can be 28 square inches or more. We do the math on that one and find that he would be applying a mere 35/28 = 1.25 PSI ! That said, I had a particular female teacher who was about 4'8" and about 85-90 pounds sopping wet. Because of her extensive knowledge of pressure points and leverage, she could easily cripple someone in a heartbeat if she wanted to, or she could float a stroke like a feather on the breeze.
