I'm generally the one who's in a dominant role sexually (and in everyday life) but lately I've been really wanting to get spanked and punished in other ways.

I think it's like pretty much everything else in a relationship - you need to talk with him and let him know how you're feeling and ask how he feels about it and hopefully be able to work out something that he's comfortable with that gets you what you're looking for.

Some guys would be thrilled if their girlfriend told them she wanted to be spanked, but other won't be and if he's naturally submissive it might be more difficult for him to do that. (Does he show any signs of dominance in any aspect of life?) Hopefully you'll be able to talk through it and he'll understand that it's something you would really like and he'll be willing to do it for you even if it's not something that really excites him.

What other kinds of punishments are you wanting? Do you know if your main reason for wanting to be spanked/punished is that you'd like to be in a more submissive role or are you wanting to feel pain? If it's mainly about feeling pain, be aware that many guys won't feel comfortable with inflicting real pain on the partner that they love. So maybe he'd be willing to do a relatively light spanking that doesn't really hurt you, but would not be willing to do something more severe that leaves you with bruises.

Hopefully you'll be able to work something out that's mutually acceptable. If he's not comfortable with it at all though, you might have to let it go.
