One of my favorite porn movies of all time is The Satisfiers Of Alpha Blue, written and directed by Gerard Damiano (writer/director of Deep Throat), and starring Robert Kerman (aka R. Bolla), Herschel Savage and Lysa Thatcher.
It's a Sci-Fi dystopian future movie, where people only work like an hour a week, but they are assigned jobs and have no choice about them. Kerman and Savage work at a sex resort called Alpha Blue, which gives them unlimited access to Alpha Blue's services - essentially unlimited casual sex with any "satisfier" they like. Savage thinks it's the best thing ever, but Kerman is unsatisfied - he wants real love, which is practically unheard of. Savage thinks he's foolish and misguided.
Thatcher plays a satisfier who loves her job fulfilling the random desires of people, but Kerman falls for her, and slowly works to win her over to the concepts of love and monogamy, though she initially resists his overtures of love.
Yes, the visuals are very dated, but given the tiny budgets they had to work with, they really tried hard and in that context, the results are pretty impressive. The sex scenes are pretty hot, the sets for their time were quite impressive, the wardrobe was unique, and they even used a memorable theme song called The Big One - which a year later was selected to be the theme song for a TV show that went on to be come very famous: The People's Court, starring Judge Wapner.
Gerard Damiano's son is working to try to get his dad's movies restored - like most porn of the era, it was shot on film in 1.85:1 widescreen for porn theaters, but the only video releases available are from cropped 1:33:1 video transfers from the 80s. Here's hoping they manage to get a restoration done.

The Cinemax type porn movies were mostly just too cheesy although some had half-decent stories.
With modern porn, the biggest issue is that it's just a F-session. Some try to lazily work in a very thin story, especially the step-family garbage, it's just so unbelievably and poorly acted that any taboo they are trying to illicit is lost in the cheese. The banging is so typical that it's boring. They rely solely on the hotness of the female in almost every case.
I've stopped watching porn completely (for other reasons), but I did enjoy the kink play videos.. or wanted to enjoy them is a better way to put it. Most kinks need a story and build up to really involve the viewer and make it hot, but nearly every "scene" out there is just more fail on the growing epic pile of fail. There's so many great stories out there in the erotic literature market (but a lot of cheese too) but there's no reason for it in video other than lazy directors and producers. I've always thought about starting up my own company to do more interesting and real story-based porn, but between the startup costs, lawyers, etc.. I'm just not up to the investment and risk.
it really depends. if I'm watching with my girlfriend, we play this game where we see how long we can keep off of each other while watching, and then once we've 'broken the seal' will try and mimic everything we see on the screen, through the whole movie.
if I'm alone though - will just watch enough to get me to where I need to be, so to speak :-)

So, most of the porn with the better story lines and so forth are "classics" - from the "Golden Age of Porn" (roughly 1969-1984), when the movies were all shot on film and shown in porn theaters on the big screen. Certainly, the cameras and lighting and sound and other things weren't as good as they are today, but they put a lot more focus on the stories and acting, and while some of the porn people were terrible actors, many were quite good and had worked in NYC theater or in movies. And while some had really generic and cheesy sets and costumes, some had really high production values, even by today's standards. But the best thing is that many of these movies have been restored or scanned from original negatives or 1st-generation prints, and are available in HD in widescreen. Stuff made after 1984 was increasingly shot on analog video tape and will never look better than it does, but the older stuff that was shot on film can look pretty. There's a company called Vinegar Syndrome that restores both classic porn as well as low-budget SciFi, creature, and exploitation films from the 60s and 70s, with many titles getting HD Blu-Ray releases, but many others are released on DVD, usually 2 or 3 movies per DVD, under the Peakarama brand.

I believe the reason porn was filmed as part of a movie with a plot and acting scenes shoehorned in between the fuck scenes in the first place was in order to avoid censorship and restrictive laws against obscene material.

That's true. Porn was technically illegal to produce up until a case in the California Supreme Court in 1986. Before that, the only plausible defense (which was not guaranteed to work, but was hoped to work) was to point to the 1st Amendment's protection of artistic works. If producers could show that the film had genuine artistic value (a story, a plot, characters, etc.), then they felt it would be harder to prosecute.
@MrOracle And judges used to LOVE to preside over cases involving pornographers because they would throw the judge a piece of pussy to placate him. They could always find a way to come to an understanding.
