I have spent several hundred nights in motels. Never had a maid walk in without knocking first. Usually they also call "maid service" or something similar before entering.

Something that's changed over the years is that for what I assume is liability reasons, maids are not aloud to be in the room at the same time as a customer. They will either ask you to leave or come back later. I have had them violate the rule though, when I told them it was OK to clean.

Well first of all I didn't hear the knock I'm sure she may have at least that's what she said she came back later that night she was worried about losing their job but I assured her she wouldn't

I think she will be more careful next time. If you had a do not disturb sign, she shouldn't have knocked or gone it. Normally they would go to another room and save yours for last. Eventually they'll want to get in, but I don't know what the policy is if they are down to the last rooms.
