The *majority* of people contract this in their lifetime and people are overwhelmingly asymptomatic. Most that do experience symptoms will one notice the one acute outbreak after contraction, but will likely never see it again. Again, there's also that 2% that are chronically symptomatic, and with them it gets less of a problem beyond young adulthood, outbreaks are rare and are usually linked to sickness and stress.
There's a tingle you notice when a sore might be forming, getting a cream applied to it in this window can often negate the sore before it occurs. The window is about within the day, depending on how it feels. So if you really want to be careful then you can ask if she feels anything coming on.
If it's already forming, then the early period in the break out is the infectious period. This is when you're at risk on contracting it.
Once formed an becomes a sore it's still infectious, but less so, it's also obvious if on the face. So if you really want to be careful it wouldn't hurt to avoid that for a few days.
Later on it's basically just a scar/scab and might look bad, but it's not the infectious period you really need to be concerned about.

Also, having one strain of herpes gives you some protection from the other. So if you have genital herpes (not the majority, but about 30% of people including asymptomatic carriers and one-time break out cases for genital herpes) I wouldn't worry about contracting oral herpes.
The best chance to really put your worries to rest is to get tested and if you've already got it and are asymptomatic then you can just stop caring -- you've already got it, it's incurable, but it's not impacting you at all, so you can relax.
I believe that most people with herpes have it either on their mouth or on their genitals but not both. It might be possible to be afflicted in both locations but unless the infection happened at the same time then it wouldn't occur.
People can have oral herpes (HSV-1) on their mouth or genitals or they can have genital Herpes (HSV-2) on their mouth or genitals. Some unlucky people have herpes on their anus (mostly gay men) .
So if she has HSV-1 on her mouth then her vagina is probably herpes free
