I am a Catholic, and I have studied this topic.
So here is what we believe. Sex is good and amazing, and it has two purposes. Procreative and unitive. And it is only properly done in a marriage. So anything that deliberately arouses sexual desire is not allowed outside of marriage. Including sexting.
But inside of marriage, you can have as much sex as you want. And it's celebrated as a very good thing. (Another commenter said that we don't allow sex for pleasure, and that is false)

I'm not a priest or nun or even Catholic, but I have friends that are Catholic and grew up in an area with a lot of Catholics and based on everything I've heard, I would be very surprised if they are.
My understanding is that priests and nuns are expected to devote their lives to God and forgo all personal pleasures, particularly anything sexual. Of course, as we've seen from the sexual abuse scandals, they don't always avoid anything sexual, but I think they are supposed to. I really doubt that masturbation is official allowed either. I don't think any form of sexual activity/pleasure is permitted.
I think that even Catholics that aren't priests or nuns are pretty limited on what kind of sexual activity is officially allowed. I don't think that most Catholics really follow those rules, but unless something has changed recently I think those rules are officially there.
I'm not sure what kind of nun you talked to, but nuns are absolutely not allowed to masturbate. So obviously they wouldn't be allowed to sext either. Catholics believe any type of sexual behavior is to be for the sole purpose of procreation, and only within the confines of marriage. This is also why many Catholics also do not believe in birth control, of any means, because even within a marriage, sex for the sole purpose of pleasure is sinful.

She's either misinformed or part of some progressive convent that doesn't follow Vatican law. I'm not saying she's wrong. I'm Lutheran, and think some of the stringent things of the Catholic faith are man made rules that are difficult to find support for biblically.

That depends on what you mean by "Allow". They are not allowed to have sex but they are also kind of allowed to have sex (to "get it out of their system" as they say. This is because its in human nature to have sexual desires and trying to repress them can get very bad for you. Historicaly priests use to be able to get married and have families but the vatican got tired of having to care for all of those families so they banned the practice.).
So chances are they are not allowed to officially do it but they are probably allowed to unofficially because again, sexuality is part of human nature and if you just force them to supress it, just like with any other emotion, it ends up causing far more problems.
Some sects can sext.
But the text directs sex and forgets sext.
So for a sect sex isn't correct but sext is in some sects.
