For example, if the guy with the good job spent all his money on drugs and drinking, then he was still left with nothing, if the good-looking guy wasn't interested in a long-term relationship, she had no future with him, if the guy with the big mansion has tons of debt because of it, he won't have money to spend, or won't have the mansion for long, and the one with connections would be doing business with shady people and invite troubles from time to time. So if they could get a guy with all the upsides, they would also have all the downsides as well.
