Do rappers these days have any skill?

Back in the day some rappers were capable of rhyming mansion with Wisconsin. Nowadays they are just rhyming wet as pussy with wet ass pussy.

  • No. Why? Because if I gave you a beat someone else produced, a pen, and a piece of paper, you too could write “Wet Ass Pussy”. In fact, I’d wager you could write an even better song.

Realistically speaking, today’s musicians are not famous for their talent; rather, they are famous for their brand. Nikki Minaj has all the time in the world to write some trashy, insipid song lyrics that are just barely comprehensible to the borderline-autist, which comprises the majority of her fan base. Ask yourself: “can’t anyone do that?” The answer is an emphatic, “yes.” People like Nikki because she says outrageous things that pertain to her gigantic, synthetic posterior; not because she is talented.

    • I concur, but I’ve also heard that a lot of these big rappers aren’t even writing their own music. Can’t someone off the screen create real rhymes? I mean a lot of things rhyme with pussy like wussy, gushy and Albuquerque for example.

    • I see where you’re coming from, but you aren’t’t accounting for their audience: the borderline autist. The model of simplicity works best here. If the song isn’t a hardly coherent clamouring of profane lyrics regarding the holy trifecta of sex, drugs, and money, no one will listen. This is evident in the fact that the majority of today’s most famous rappers fit into this mild. You can see what styles are rewarded, and unfortunately, this is it.

  • The competition for being a good lyricist was significantly different back then, but that doesn't meant here aren't any good rappers today. I think just the priorities have changed, since having a good beat or catchy song is the goal today as most popular songs are that way that play on the radio.

Also with having a less of an emphasis on being a good songwriter it does mean rappers aren't pushed as hard in that direction meaning they evolve slowler as a songwriter. So at the end of the day I suppose it depends what you see as skilled - being a lyricist or a producer. Perhaps both.
