Men often are under performance pressure in bed and "size" has been a symbol of maleness since the stone age. There might also be female sexual selection going on for larger penises, but I believe the issue is more related to the symbolic character of the penis.
Also a vagina will stretch in length during arousal and most women will eventually be able to take more than just "3 or 4" inches. Apparently stimulation of the cervix is an important factor for some woman's pleasure during vaginal penetration.

You know this is an interesting post. The ancients were fascinated with penises as your statue example shows. And fast forward to the Renaissance and Michaelangelo's "David" sculpture depicted a realistic flaccid penis that lots of size-obsessed people would think is small. for millenia different cultures have had different standards for manlyness and it just so happens that big penis is manly so guys feel so bad about their bodies because they aren't "manly" enough due to their penis size.

I think every boy/man has always thought about this. I've often thought it is relatable to women and breast size.

I suppose in some wrong and sick way a man looks at this as a measure of their maleness.

As a grower I have always felt a little embarrassed when flacid, but I'm perfectly fine erect. And it is something I think about, even when just a bulge in my trousers.
