If the area has a lot of well oxygenated blood it'll be red. Also if she has a lot of that specific kind of melanin.

I believe the actual inside is commonly red. Certainly when they're young. Hormones factor into this to as evidenced by how bright red the genitals of newborn females can be.

As far as I know, she is right. You have to understand that female genitals are richly vascularized (they have a lot of blood vessels around). That gives the tissue that reddish color.

They are all different colors. They can be light pink or even brownish in places. Don't worry about it. It's normal.
