Oh without hesitation, the very first word that came to my mind was "screens".
Ya, be it monitor screens, mobile screens, or cinema screens, they had taken over many people's life (regrettably including myself).
And they are so destructive that relationships failed because screens took away communication time; students failed exams because they neglected studies over that addiction; workers lost efficiency and effectiveness because of the distraction of screens during work hours; and the list goes on...
Indeed, no other substance, hobbies, or lifestyle had greater negative impacts on life than screens. Not even when they all put together in any modern person's life on earth.
(A modern person possesses at least one screen and have connection 24/7.)
Those are all potentially very serious but I’m going to list the more contemporary issues of destiny addiction, feedback addiction, and the desire for fame (which is often one short step away from infamy.)

But the worst you would have to think of the consequences of them.

yes. in a way every person is addicted to living. you can always choose to not eat, drink, seek medical attention, care about yourself. yet everyone does these things and more to stay alive.
