Is it good to judge someone according to their preference?

Yesterday I saw 'fifty shades of gray' with some friends, one of them said he liked the BDSM concept and the other one started laughing on him about that and then they had a huge fight, I somehow stopped them and talked to them separately.
Personally I don't mind my friend liking BDSM, and that's why I was confused why my other was making fun of him.
It's not only about BDSM here why someone should judge others for their preferences.
Do you know any reason why people judge others?

  • I don't judge others for their preference... I think people on here think I'm that way just cuz I personally don't agree or don't understand.. .
But I don't ever judge THE PERSON themselves, I just don't get some of the things people do these days. But I don't ever say that makes them a bad person... But nowadays if you disagree with a person, or a lifestyle choice, you're being judgmental...
I don't personally get the whole hook up culture, online dating, online engagements, but that's each person's individual choice... I don't think that makes anyone a bad person tho...
But then you have people on here attacking/judging people for their political choices, sexual choices, etc
Not understanding something is not the same as being judgmental...

    • Very well said mam. Everyone has their own choices or preferences, we might not understand them but we should not attack them on those preferences.

    • Exactly, but these days if you don't agree with someone, either they act like you attacking them, or they attack you for disagreeing 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • Yes and it's not right, this only increases friction between people.

  • Some people are not that accepting of others preferences especially when they view it as a taboo or when its conflicting with their beliefs and opinions. These kind of people often have a restrictive mindset and they tend to be quick in their judgments. Personally, I don't believe on judging anyone because I don't really know their exact situation, plus I'm not in their shoes, so judging someone solely based on it will not make sense. A person wise will think twice before making a judgmental remark, because he/she is aware of the fact that it will hurt someone's feelings.

    • ** A wise person

    • That's very true mam. Even if you don't accept others preference you don't get to judge them.

    • Yes 🙂

  • Firstly, 50 shades is a pretty terrible depiction of BDSM.

And yes, most of us who do get involved keep it a secret from vanilla people because they don't understand. You'll either get people thinking you're a weirdo rapist or not trusting you. People fear what they don't understand.

    • Very well said sir. And according to me even if they fear it they should not lash out on others about it.

  • No, judging others isn't right and as you can see, it can cause conflict.

    • So do you think there is any reason for that?

    • I think some people think they are better than others and that gives them the right to judge.

    • I think you are right, brother.
