Why are people homophobic? Why does my Dad act this way?

I'm pretty middle conservative myself and the single thing I cannot understand about people is why they hate the lgbt. Like I personally don't like people who try to shove it down your throat, but I honestly have no problem with peoples sexual orientations because it has nothing to do with me. Like what they do in the bedroom doesn't concern me in the slightest. I have a few friends who have literally ghosted people for being gay or bi. I was watching "Brooklyn Nine Nine" with my parents tonight... my dad sometimes comes in and watches with us. And if you watch it, you'll know the Captain is gay. He mentioned something a long the lines of "Oh, my husband was here yesterday" and my Dad screams "He's a faggot? What the hell? They have a fag on this show?" And then he storms off slamming the door to his room. I mean I know he's really conservative but jesus christ how sensitive. Like the show's main premise isn't gay people as I've seen A LOT of shows do nowadays. Personally, I'm bisexual myself and I haven't told him and I don't shove it down peoples throats... but I just don't get where this mentality comes from though? Is it just upbringing? Like I don't understand how this can concern someone so much if it doesn't involve them?

  • Some people believe that it's not natural. They think that nature has made male and female for each other not male and male or female and female. People hate this more because they are afraid that their children might turn out to be one of LGBT. Now why are they afraid? Just because they think their children will end up marrying someone who is of the same gender and then their relatives and friends would talk about them and small things like that.
See. Suppose you tell me you are a gay. Then I will start thinking about u, like what you want. I will start imagining you saying , "Daddy, make me your slave" which will make me laugh and I will laugh at you. Well I won't do it in real life as I don't give a fuck who does what, i just care about myself mostly but this was an example of basic human nature.
Now this happens because we all are too complex. Now see if you have told all your friends that you are bisexual then that's pretty good as you are open with them Similarly if everyone starts being open then this will become normal

  • I can tell you it stems mostly from religion. Abrahamic religion especially. The more religious and conservative you are, the more prejudice you will have towards homosexuals, because their books said homosexuality is forbidden.

Older generations especially tend to be more conservative and close minded. When you are taught to hate or look down on people different from you from an early age, then you will have that mindset.

  • Screaming f*ggot and slamming the door shut is way too dramatic to be his upcoming. Some people are just born homophobic it seems, and you can’t really help that.

    • I am not justifying homophobia. Carrying on like he did is a big indication he’s far too gone. Imagine coming out to him, he’s probably going to slam your face in a door and disown you. Nobody should act like that, and it sounds like a dangerous situation to put yourself into if you try to change his opinion.

  • No idea tbh.. i am bi and my folks whom i live with are are cool about it

  • aka why i am anti conservative. They seem to get upset over anything that don't actually impact them. If a guy wants to be with a guy who cares. if a women wants to wear revealing clothes who cares. etc.

    • I know. I'm pretty in between myself so I've seen both sides. But the biggest thing I notice about conservatives is that they tend to be mad at liberals for being sensitive when they're the ones who are sensitive themselves in this matter.🤷🏻‍♀️

    • That's mostly due to cultural upbringing and religion and listening to the echo chambers and well also thanks to some individual far lefts who do say some dumbass things which they seem to base all the collective lefts on.

    • Then there is also left wingers who also are homophobic so it's not even a side thing. It's just Conservative views. Which i will always stay away from, but i also stay away from far left stuff that say stuff like "everyone should be bi" lol

  • Because they have proper moral values and they are Christian they Don’t like homosexuality it’s quite simple

  • Because 99% of gays try and stuff it down your throat. If i could say be your co worker for a year and not know you're gay, and if you're otherwise respectable. Well then i dont really care. But the majority of gays are proud gays and that's evil. The act like "bundles of sticks" and are flamers and that's disgusting. Proud Gays are also a spreader of communism and nonsense like that.

    • Yeah I totally understand that. It's annoying when they completely ruin a show/movie just for the sake of political nonsense like the lgbt... like they're doing with Marvel righr now. Or like they have a whole month shoving it in your face everywhere.

    • You get it. Well i think most conservatives think how i do BUT most people dont understand themselves enough to explain it. Ie like he hates them being all out on TV just surprising him when he wants to watch something. But does he want to go find gays and yell at them? I bet not.

  • I agree with your dad they put that BS on TV to condition people. It is a way to try to nornalize something that is not normal so I understand where he is coming from. Now if a show has a gay character it only bothers me if they show them do something disgusting, Otherwise I just do not care. If they show something gross though I cannot watch or have to fast forward through it.

    • Yeah yeah yeah I get that completely... I don't like it myself because it's "so in your face" typa thing. But the show we were watching like hardly even touches on it... maybe like one or two mentions about a significant other.

  • They aren't afraid of gays they simply dont like them. Calling them homophobic makes insecure people feel better about being unliked. Nobody is afraid of them
