Why do you think so many people are misinformed about bra sizing?

Every day on here I see people talking about 'A and B cups' and 'DD cups' etc - as if it means anything. It 👏 means 👏 nothing 👏 without 👏 band 👏 size.

It's not just cup sizes, but people don't understand band sizes either. They think 32, 34 and 36 are small band sizes but they're more in the medium range.

  • Since most manufactures only make bras from like 32A to 42DD. They sell them in almost a straight line of about 6 typical sizes between those two extremes (32A, 34B, 36C, 38D, 40DD, 42DD) so most women don't really have an opportunity to buy their exact size. If they are a 30G, they are going to settle for a 36C or D and hope it works when adjusted. You can only fault the manufacturers so much. Trying to make custom sized bras from 26-48 a-m would be a lot of bras to invest in making without knowing if that one in 2 million 26M or 48A girl is going to buy it. Number is band size around rib cage and cup size is difference at fullest part of breasts (while wearing another bra which adds to the confusion) and is a measure of volume. 30DD, 32D, 34C, 36B, 38A all have similar volume. If you make bras and buy underwires, the wires work like that. I think the average cup size is up to D or DD for mature women now so thanks McDonalds and you aren't that special if you are DD anymore. You may just be average. If you are like... I'm not that big and are walking around with quadboob and your band riding up your back... get measured, you have grown since high school.

    • You had me until you said 'average cup size'. D/DD is actually small-medium on most band sizes.

    • Average cup size is definitely not F and G. You have a link to the G cup study?

    • If all women were correctly fitted, the average cup sizes would probably be F, FF and G. But that's the problem, most women aren't correctly fitted. I'm pretty sure there are zero studies concerning boobs, bras and bra sizing that actually use CORRECT bra-sizing knowledge.

  • A big part of it is that, until the last 20 years or so, those smaller band sizes were practically non-existent, and so just were never talked about and rarely worn. You would have to go to a specialty maker to get them custom made, because they weren't considered to be popular/common sizes that would justify mass production.

Today, with much larger markets available to manufacturers (international distribution is practical today), it's much easier for many manufacturers to justify mass production of sizes on both the upper and lower ends of the scale, so smaller women and bigger women are both more able to buy "off the rack" sizes that fit, though women with very large breasts still usually need custom work.

  • Not everybody wants to say their full cup size here, I'm sure most of us know how sizing works :)

    • No, the majority of women don't. I'll give just ONE example - so many of us think it's correct to add 4 inches to our underbust measurements to get our band sizes - this is incorrect.

  • A woman's bra size is just a starting point for getting fitted in a good bra, esp for those more endowed among you ladies.

    • Finding the right size can even be tricky for small-chested ladies. So many people are misinformed about bra sizing.

  • I like the small numbers and letters, I think. Like 12AAA.

    • I don't like the big ones like 900ZXXX

    • Big letters and numbers usually mean she is fat or got implants. I don't like either so much.

    • I cannot tell if your comments are a joke or not.

  • Are you talking about women or men? Men have zero clue on what all that is and means. Even the stuff we know that we know about it is wrong.

    • Men and women, actually!

  • Who cares lol

  • Eh... it's probably a porn thing. The cup size is a ratio thing. A DD sized tit is going to add 5 inches to band size, no matter which band size she wears, so you can get an idea that her chest is more pronounced. You're right though, cup size doesn't tell you very much.

  • Thanks, now I am more informed. No idea , maybe because us men don't need them?

    • Probably! But the majority of women are misinformed too!
