Why are trans people lumped into the LGBT movement when gender has no connection with sexuality?

  • I've seen many men suddenly say they are lesbian and lesbians must fuck them or they are transphobic. I've also seen them say the same thing about men. Many lesbians (and gay men) are pissed off about the biology denial movement because it tramples all over everyone's rights.

In California, a man can now self-ID as a woman and be sent to a woman's prison. What could possibly go wrong?

    • I'm going to identify as a woman whenever I want to punch females in the face and demand to be hailed as a brave trans person

    • Celebrate my struggle or else!

    • Please don't. :D

  • You forgot the Q. Queer has always been a part of it, and that's not in the derogatory form. Queer, meaning unusual in a sexual or gender sense (including cross dresser, DRAG, etc). Queer is an umbrella for all people who fall outside of hetero-normative behavior. Why? Because they all face similar struggles against society, and people such as yourself who like to intrude into their personal affairs and question their validity on every level.

Don't you have better things to contemplate than groups which you don't belong to and which don't pertain to you at all?

  • Because the pro-trans movement is so much fresher than the stonewall days, it was just easier to integrate them into what we then considered to be a loosely related, but already existing protected class. That said, it wasn't necessarily a haphazard maneuver -- If you think about it, there is such a huge overlap between the types of people who hate the L, G, and B, and the people who hate the T, that it probably wouldn't make much difference at all if they had their own protected class; The enemy of your enemy is your friend.

    • Who decided on this "integration"?

    • Enemy is a strong word don't ya think?

    • Couldn't tell you, but I haven't seen a lesbian, gay, or bi person mad about it yet. I totally think that we should reinforce the divide between sexual orientation and masculine-feminine gender identity, though, and perhaps we should be worried that the LGBT moniker collapses nuance, but, culturally speaking, the gender-related socioeconomic issues kind of share a boat with the sexual orientation-related ones, so I think it can probably stay for now. Once we stop banning trans women from literally all women's sports regardless of whether they have an advantage or not, and maybe cut it out with taking queer people off of medicare, then I think it would be a more fit time to divvy it up and worry about everyone being properly and accurately represented for their individual, particular identity class.

  • T stands for and includes trans people no. As to my understanding the movement is about giving people with non conformist sexual behaviour a voice which would include trans people. Plus in a way you could argue being trans is more about gender identity and sexuality and fundamtally there are only two biological genders

    • How is transgender identity considered non-conformist sexual behavior?

    • Sexual behaviour is what fundamentally differentiates people's sexual identity no

    • Is sexual identity a fundamental part of gender identity?

  • Why do you even need to group and categorize people? Identity politics is evil.

    • Rational. But categorisation allows sophistication and a way to talk about subjects and problems

    • Ok, but aren't you making it political? The question has nothing to do with political ideology

    • As soon as you group people into categories, the politics just comes next. Your own question is prime example, you're asking if some people should be excluded from the group based on their category.
