Girls, did you ever notice that you prefer other men on your fertile days?
I find this stuff super interesting! To all women who don't use hormonal contraception: Did you ever notice that you are sexually more attracted to testosterone-loaded, "masculine" men on your fertile days than on your infertile days?
The so-called "Ovulatory shift hypothesis" has been proven by countless studies and is hardly controversial among evolutionary biologists. It states that women’s mate preferences shift over their hormonal cycle.
Put simply, it's like this:
On their infertile days, women prefer men who are willing and able to do "parental investing” meaning men who are willing and able to provide for their offspring. Women prefer in this phase rather loving, caring, humorous, reliable, hard-working etc... men as they are best suited to help raising the offspring.
On their fertile days, on the other hand, women prefer men who have "good genes". By "good genes" is meant genes with which the offspring has both: high chances of survival and high chances of reproduction. Characteristics that signal (subconsciously) to women that a man has "good genes" are almost everything that is correlated with high testosterone levels, such as:
- assertiveness, dominance
- a deep voice
- a prominent jaw
- a strong, muscular body
- a strong beard growth (I am not claiming that most women are attracted to long beards, but that most are attracted to a strong beard growth. That’s a difference!)
- willingness to take risks
etc..
If you don’t believe this, I can provide tons of studies I read, that have confirmed it.
My question now is: have you ever recognized that your preferences change over the cycle?
