Why do some transgender people keep their old names?

I've seen male to female transgenders who are still called Robert and everyone still calls them Rob and female to male transgenders who keep their girl name.

  • There's no way to know without asking the person, because reason vary from family (pressure) to the expense of changing it to not wanting to fully let go of the past to not wanting to be defined by a single gender...

I'd think that a woman with the name Robert would want to go by Bobbi (or Bobbie), though, because the pronunciation applies to both women & men (Bobby). And if she ever wanted to change her name, Roberta would be the most logical choice.

  • Some people just like it, despite being typically associated with a gender they don't identify as. Some parents name their kids as opposite gender names, such as a girl called Darryl, so don't see why trans people can't keep their old name if they feel that connected to it.
