Since we're always taught from a young age that guys are supposed to like girls and vice versa a lot of non-heterosexual people start discovering their sexuality later.
For example many homosexuals try to date people of the opposite gender before they realize it just isn't working, it's not what they are.
It can also take time before they start exploring themselves and opening up to the idea that they might be non-hetero because not being straight is often mocked and shamed. They might also accept it but keep hiding it.

I didn't recognise that I was bisexual until I learned what that term meant, when I realised I had crushes on girls from a young age.
