Not knowing the guy, it's a guess. He could be generous, or he could be trying to make an impression on you, or even use it as a away of flirting.
But his woman was with him
A guy can still be generous, eve though his woman was with him. As said, I don't know the guy. I also don't know what his wife if like. If she is a jealous type, the look may have been unwarranted. if she is a reasonable woman, then the look may have meant that he was flirting or worse, and she didn't like it.
I thought it was inappropriate and if my man did that to a woman around our age I’d be so mad. I would not mind if it was a grandma

Did you have any conversations with these guys? Maybe they thought you were a nice person and decided to be generous. Maybe they did it as an ice breaker. I have done that on a few occasions just to pay it forward. I've had people give me money when I came up short a couple times and didn't expect it back. So I in turn help others when I can
No, they were behind me and the guy just payed as soon as my total came up
