I'm not really either one, but if I had to pick it would be sadist. I didn't use to understand spanking, choking, degradation. I like to be nice to people both in and out of the bedroom, so it didn't make sense to me to want to hurt someone. I do like being dominant, but for me being a Dom is more about being in control, but making sure we are both receiving pleasure. In fact, I put my sub's pleasure first because I get off on how much she is enjoying herself due to my control.

But then I had a sub who really enjoyed those painful stimuli. So I would spank her and choke her, and because she got so much pleasure out of it, I started to enjoy it as well. I don't see it as inflicting pain so much as inflicting excitement. Very much sadistic. There are those odd days where I just don't want to put the effort in though, of being master, setting the pace, making the scene, having all the responsibility of making things exciting and enjoyable.

I don't like pain, nor enjoy when my partner is in pain. If I had a partner that got pleasure from pain, just the fact that she is having pleasure probably would make me do it for her, and I can imagine me enjoying that.

In terms of doing or receiving other kinds of domination, like being tied up, handcuffed, blinfolded, teased, edged... I like both. I think I have a small tendency to be the one doing it, though.
