Prostitutes, what's your story?

I wanna know why exactly people get into prostitution. Were you forced? Is it a choice you made? Did you have a pimp? I am quite curious.

Also, any hate towards people who choose to keep anon off will be reported! This is just a question to get answers.

To clarify: I am NOT considering the profession at all. I'm planning on writing a story actually, where the main character is in fact a prostitute. I wanted to get this as accurate and non-hateful as possible, as to make sure I'm portraying the character right.

  • I personally know two "traditional" prostitutes.
    One is married, higher class, she makes regular "work trips" to a neighboring state and then comes back home with money.
    Her husband is ok with it be cause he too gets to enjoy the extra income (whatever state their relationship is, I don't really know the details).

    The other prostitute was "working" behind her boyfriend's back throughout college.
    Nasty, trashy person (also toxic and abusive towards the boyfriend), spent the money on dumb crap and drugs.

    Neither of them had a pimp, or at least I don't think.
    The lady in the first case, they weren't even struggling financially or anything, she just likes the extra spending money.

    I have also briefly known a couple who are officially into the swingers "lifestyle", but it's understood by the "participants" that they shouldn't be showing up empty handed and that "gifts" such as gift baskets, pricey alcohol, cosmetics, jewelry etc for the lady are a "welcome and polite way to express gratitude".
    It's low-key prostitution, they won't immediately kick you out if they don't like your "gratitude" but you won't be getting invited again, and the ones who do get invited often give them things that sometimes go into thousands.

  • I am likely one of few guys going to admit this, however I have friends that are and a couple that used to be involved with aspects of sex from dancing to prostitution.

    From what I know a huge thing was simply paying the bills, now some were heavily suggested by those they owed money to that it was an option.

    for others it was simply lack of employment and need to get kids clothes etc.

    a few acquaintances were via drugs (met those through outreach work).

    a friend of mine is also a male escort (part time) and is fairly open on what he does, obviously when we go out, we tend to meet associates of his in similar game (men and women).

    I also know some that moved in to Cam work over lockdown due to lack of punters,

    I spent around 8-10 years as a volunteer at a counselling centre, we did a fair bit of outreach work for homeless, addicts and those involved in sex industry.

    the main thing to remember, is that these are people also, often with families and irrespective of what they do, they deserve respect.
