I don't know. It might just be a framing thing. I think it helps to frame decorations around the edges of a mass rather than the center.

So like take butt. We all have relatively large glute muscles. I don't think it is so attractive to put tats on the center of the butt. It looks like something floating on top rather than accentuating, complementing. But say we put a design on the side of the butt, on our hips. I think that flatters more. It surrounds and frames things. It flows.
