What is the real purpose of the hymen?

Let's see who actually knows this.

  • The physiological purpose of the hymen is one of the eternal mysteries of women's bodies. Although it does not seem to have a specific function, it' is thought that hymen tissue remains as a indication of vaginal development. Embryologically, it tended to keep germs and dirt out of the vagina. In infants and children, the hymen can serve a protective purpose by helping to prevent things from being pushed into the vagina; sometimes, a damaged hymen is looked at as an indicator of abuse and incest. Throughout history, there have been cultures that forbid sexual activity outside of marriage; some of these have considered an "intact" hymen "proof" of purity. This connection continues to have a psychological and cultural impact today. Medically speaking, however, the concept of an "intact" hymen is a myth. Most hymens do not fully cover the vaginal entry so that menstrual fluid can leave the body. Hymen is not a reliable indicator of whether a girl has been sexually active or not. There are also those whose hymen tissue is so flexible that it moves aside during penetration. In addition, if a hymen is stretched or torn, pain or bleeding may occurr that generally lasts for a short period of time, or, there may not be any "signs" or discomfort at all. I had not feel any remarkable pain for my first time sex.

    • That should be in quotations 😏

    • Completely agree with ma'am 🙌

  • Let's break it down (I already knew but I just felt like sharing)

  • I did actually know about the bacteria thing, down to a pub quiz lol.

also humans are not only animals with a hymen - manatees, whales, elephants, hyenas, horses and likely others but a larger number without.

    couple general links below.

it’s also shocking how certain societies view a girl with and without a hymen.

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/mar/16/hymen-oppression-female-sexuality-body
    .

    https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sexual-health/girls-bodies-faqs/

the reason we have one, must be closely linked to the reason other animals.

imagine the size of a whale hymen

I am surprised sheep don’t have one...

    • While having a Google around on this, hey I tend to on most questions, as often what we know is only part of a bigger thing.

Some of the bits about how society views it are so fucking 6th Century and demeaning.

      www.buzzfeednews.com/.../indonesia-backs-away-from-virginity-exams-for-high-school-gi

They backed down from having all school girls having a check, but policewomen and military must have a hymen check.

I mean that is like totally fucked up, those jobs will without sex fuck your entire body over, so it’s an utterly pointless check, the first low level C130 ride will ‘deflower’ any girl.

Yeah, young adults don’t have enough to worry about other than exams, careers, body shaming, bullying, fucking everything else, then certain societies shove this bollox on them.

It does annoy the fuck out of me the shit other humans put on to other humans.

    • It is not proven that hymen protects against bacteria in fact vast majority of bacteria can traverse the hymen

    • @Gertrude_Awonk I know it’s not proven no one is saying it’s proven, that’s that the links pretty much say, hence my comment if we find out why some animals have one it might help find out why humans have one. It’s the best scientific option at this moment in time.

  • I mean... It's not but also kinda is just a weird woman version of foreskin.
And mostly that's just there to stop bactria so i would guess the same?

It's kinda just pointless tho. And women can be born without it so. Same with men and there forskin however i believe that is rarer and more spefic to actaul jewish commuintys due to obvious reasons. Were as i think women it's just more common to not have a hymen. Could be wrong tho.

  • Scientifically? No one actually knows, its still being debated in scientific circles. However one suggestion is that it could help keep bacteria out of the vaginal canal.

  • I am sorry but I don't know, I'm too high-man.

;3. I had to do it.

  • The hymen has no proven medical or physiological purpose.

  • I don't actually know but I'm guessing to help with cleanliness and bacteria?

  • Protection or pleasure? 🤔

  • I'm not aware of any biological purpose for the hymen.

  • It has no known function. The hymen can be present or absent, and it can completely obstruct the introitus or be entirely missing. Most women born with one contrive to lose it through self exploration or sex

    • Nope it has a function

    • Some have only theorized that girls with hymens had better survivability because it afforded them some protection against waterborne microbes in their developmental years.

    • Without it as a baby we would forever be getting thrush

  • My guess is to block entry by bacteria or yeast when girls are very young.

  • I googled it and it seems like there are a lot of theories from scientists but nothing concrete?

  • Not the best way to ask since anyone can just google it and then pretend they knew.

    • Pretty obvious who googles it especially when they just plagiarize an entire article.

    • Perhaps, it's not difficult to rewrite a bit though.

  • I haven't 'seen' one in decades :)
It's perhaps to say ''Hy'' to the men?

  • To keep the snakes out and once the snake break the gate be careful

  • To judge whether a woman is worthy of a ring or the door of course

  • for decoration? lol

  • To protect the cervix, no?

I have no idea why girls have a hymen, it doesn't protect bugger all.
I've popped 2 in my life, neither time did the female bleed, just winced in pain as my penis went inside her vagina & then she was in extacy after that.
    Purpose, who knows, it's usless.

Why, are you still a virgin?

    • The hymen has nothing to do with virginity but it does have a purpose

    • And that purpose is what?

    • To keep bacteria out

    • Show All
  • that's like asking what the real purpose of an appendix is. or the purpose of a phimosis. or the purpose of eye lashes and falling into the eye, causing irritation, when their entire purpose is to protect the eye from stuff falling in to prevent irritation.

human bodies were not cleverly designed :D they are flawed biological organisms.

  • I don't know. Probably for some kind of protection... against dicks? Maybe not.

    • I wish

    • Well, if hymen evolved to protect against dicks; humans probably would have gone extinct😅

  • Helps keep bacteria out

  • I don't actually know. For me it fealt like an ethical test, a bit gory in fact that when it breaks it starts bleeding and it kind of grossed me out at first and I don't mind getting blood in my hands like skinning livestock but in the case of humans it makes me uncomfortable.
