  • Voted 15 years old. As the human body sexually matures and becomes physically able to reproduce, the instinct to have sex will naturally intensify. To make this against the law is counterintuitive. (Truth in advertising, to be fair, I lost my virginity at age 16, my girlfriend was 15.)

Making the age of consent 15 allows for some variability in the rate at which the human body sexually matures. Yet it, as noted, allows for the fact that as humans go through puberty and their bodies become capable of reproduction, the instinct to breed, as a simple matter of evolution, will intensify.

That does NOT however, end the matter. For purposes of law, males and females should not be penalized for following a healthy and natural instinct. Sex is healthy and natural and humans should not be penalized for what evolution has made a fact.

Yet that does not mean that parents should not raise their children to restrain their instincts. To teach them that sex is healthy that there is not a time and a place for it and that consequences follow from it. This needs to be taught and strongly reinforced.

However, this is the job of the parents, of families, of religions and other institutions. Not the law. The law is a blunt instrument and to legally penalize healthy males and females for an instinct given them by nature is a step too far.

So the compromise is a law that protects healthy females and males before they have sexually matured. Once the male can produce healthy sperm and the female can ovulate, the instincts that naturally follow from that should not be criminalized.

    • @SomeBlondeChick Oh good grief. Consent means just that - CONSENT. My point being that the law is a blunt instrument and that it is the duty of parents - perish the thought - to educate their children about sexuality and consent. The best the law can do - and it does not do it well - is clean up after the mess has been made. (See also the rate of out of wedlock births. So much for the law.) Bottom line, by placing the law in place of the parents and a responsible family, you get the worst of all possible worlds. A meaningless law and irresponsible families - or about what we have. Oh, that and people like yourself, who allow emotion and epithets to substitute for reason.

    • @SomeBlondeChick No, the law steps in after the fact and punishes a crime that has already been committed. It cannot work any other way. In any case, below a certain age the number ends up being arbitrary. By your logic, in a mere three years suddenly a girl who was not educated in sex and consent will be? Seems doubtful. You are asking the law to do what parents fail to do. That will not work very well.

    • @someblondechick There is no point trying to reason with you, but you are aware that 15 is the legal age in much of Europe, (see also Greece) and portions of Latin America and Africa, right? In any case, you are, as I noted, relying on the law to compensate for bad parenting, That has not worked - and probably won't work - to well.

  • Personally I think the age of consent should be the age that a girl feels she is ready. I understand the reason for having a set age so that a young girl doesn’t get taken advantage of. But if girls were properly taught about their bodies and sex then they could make more informed decisions about their body and when they are ready for sex.
I do feel that girls should learn from someone older and is more experienced. Someone that will be caring and look out for her best interest. Not some teen boy who will most likely only care about his own pleasure. To give you some kind of example think of it like learning to drive a car. You don’t learn from other teens. That would be irresponsible. You learn from someone who is much more responsible and show you the right and wrong ways of doing things so you don’t make huge mistakes that will change your life.

    • 100% agreed. Any age is ready if the girl feels like it, and an older man is a must!

    • @Asker did you need help? PM me.

    • I can’t PM first, can you send me one?

  • Every age should require consent!!! Minimum age 16 x

  • I think 16, as in UK, is about right. Not lower, but maybe a tad higher.

  • In the UK its 16 and I think that's pretty fair.
I didn't lose my virginity until I was 18, but I had friends who did at 16, and they were ready.

  • but it is dependent upon the Maturity level, emotionally and physically, of the person.

    at 14yo, i wanted sex

at 17yo, my sister still had not had sex and thought guys were gross

  • I think 15/16 is fair. But there should be a near age exception. I don't think anyone should be getting prosecuted just because the older one pops over a birthday.

  • 68...

    • 68? That's too young! Make it 103.

    • @Bellatris yes that's better

  • I think it should be 18 personally

  • Who tf put 12?

  • 18 and no lower.

  • 18 or older

  • Used to be 14 here was raised to 16. With a near age exception. I don't feel strongly between those. I think 18 is dumb. I'd moved out and was off at university at 17 which is not uncommon. We think it's reasonable for 17 year olds to take on thousands in debt to move out and live in their own attending school but that they are too young to decide if they want someone to rub their genitals? Seriously?

  • 18 unless they are both under 18, then they should both be at least 16.

  • H 21

  • I think 18 is a good age.

  • the age at which the individual is
A: fully aware of the possible consequences and is responsible enough to evoid those to the best of human knowledge.
B: Is ready and able to deal with outcomes like an umplanend parenthood.

  • I see 4 guys said 12. And someone attacked ME for comparing something I said to an 18-year-old to what I wouldn't have said to my 12-year-old granddaughter.

  • It makes no sense the laws have different laws in different parts of the United States back in the old times it used to be if they're old enough to bleed and then it's 18 now then it's 16 in other parts of USA and then in another country its at 16

  • Nobody under 18 should be having sex.

    • No one over the age of 35 should be having sex. I mean, come on man, you're too old. Ew. Yuck.

    • @Bellatris Find a cave & live there.

    • @SomeBlondeChick I was just being silly because what he said - no one under 18 having sex - ugh! REALLY?
