Has anyone ever experienced Ball Lightning?

About 6AM I got up to go to the bathroom. I left the lights off and I notices a bluish spherical shape floating in the bathroom. It was about 12 inches in diameter. I couldn't really see it too well. I thought it was some kind of illusion or something. I turned on the light to see if I could get a better look. As soon as I hit the light switch the lightbulb exploded and the sphere was gone. I have heard this is called ball lightning.

  • Being an electrician I have seen what lightning can do to a house like melt the old picture tubes in TV's, kick up grass into the roof, burn power cords to bare wire and so much more. I have seen videos and heard people discribe the ball lightning but thankfully I haven't seen it first hand.

    • Thank you for the mho

  • I did when one night long ago when some high tension power lines fell across the lower level lines leading to my house from the pole. There was a snap and a large ball of blue light floated out of one wall, went across the room, and hit the other wall. Scared the hell out of me.

    • Thanks for MHO

  • Yes years back it was in my living room it was the strangest thing, and as you said the light bulb shattered but it was orb like before hand definitely put the fear in me excellent that you brought this to light sorry for the pun

    • I have read about but nobody I know has ever seen it. Glad I'm not nuts, or maybe we both are?

    • Wow, it was just like that. I wasn't sure if I was seeing things. It was early and the room was a little dark. The ball was hovering and as soon as I turned on the light the bulb exploded. My father told me it was probably a power surge that caused the light bulb to explode.

  • I've heard of it but never been lucky enough to see one. I've heard kicking them isn't a good idea

  • That is wild! I’ve never heard of that. Was it like a static charge?

    • Like all lightning, I imagine it is based on a buildup of negative ions.

    • Very cool

    • It's based on St Elmo's fire
