Do certain tastes or smells trigger a memory for you?

I’m drinking a diet Dr. Pepper (tastes just like the original!) and it reminded me of the time I gave my first bj 20 years ago and he offered me a Dr. Pepper. He’s always been so gentlemanly. 😊

  • Yes.
In fact, right now on my desk is a can of Glade spray Lavender & Vanilla.
    It smells like "Laurasmell".

Laura was my first girlfriend from 40 years ago.
Whatever perfume she wore, I did not remember - I think a Chanel.
I got my first brokenheart - a bad one because it was the first - from her.
As the years went by, on occasion, I might catch a whiff of it... Like a woman walking my or exiting and elevator that I was entering, that sort of thing. My brain was triggered: "Laurasmell!" I found myself walking through department store makeup counters and hoping to find it. I never was successful at identifying it.

Anyway, in the almost 40 years since Laura dumped me, I've smelled that smell maybe a dozen times.

BUT, a few weeks ago, I was shopping in Walmart checking out air freshener scents and, loving lavender, tried this one. I can't say exactly that it is Laurasmell (it can't be since that was a perfume)... it's so many years later... but, when I was in Walmart and sprayed it, I was triggered that it was Laurasmell.

So, I will stick with my ersatz Laurasmell.

I should ask Laura - I think I have - but I'm pretty sure that she would not remember what perfume she wore 40+ years ago.

    • Awww. That is a sweet story.

  • Whenever my wife pours a Pilsner style beer for me, it’s a reminder she wants my face in her behind (The first time she told me to rim her was after she got tipsy on that particular style)

    • Funny. Lol

    • Pretty sure I got to eat her cream pie befor the butt was in my face that night.

    • Umm. Cool. Lol. Why did you kill your other account and start a new one? 🤔

  • Seriously girl... thank God dr pepper didn't remind you of a different kind of DP

    • 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That could be fun too.

    • I just got this 😂😂😂😂

    • Lmao

  • I don't seem to have that as much as most people. But I'm pretty sentimental about my happy memories but they tend to just come flooding in when I'm not doing anything.

The one exception is Gucci Rush 2. It is discontinued now, I think, but I had an ex and that's all she wore every single day. So if I encountered that scent on any other girl, that did actually trigger memories... although some bad ones as well in that case.

  • Yes! The smell of leather combined with coffee, always takes me back to the Mediterranean island of Ibiza, where my dad’s family own a villa. He grew up there, and took us there as kids through my mid-teens, as often as we could anyway, so many a Sumer was spent in and around San Antonio bay, Ibiza (which is unusual for Americans) but that smell always takes me back! It could be something as simple as standing in line at a Starbucks, behind a guy in a nice leather jacket!

  • Back in the house where I grew up, my bedroom was closest to our kitchen. My dad would brew a pot of coffee before going to work, so I woke up every morning to the smell of coffee. My mother never drank coffee, so when my dad died, that end (among so many other things) the small of coffee in the morning.

I don't drink coffee, I'm a tea drinker, but the smell of coffee brewing always reminds me of my dad.

    • That’s a sweet memory. Off topic: Are you a civil engineer?

    • I'm sorry, the heading for this thread popped up randomly on my screen and I didn't notice it was in the sexuality forum. I'd make it go away... if I could, but that's not possible Yes, I'm a civil engineer (retired)

    • No worries! My husband is too. That’s why I asked.

  • Certain colognes remind me of my late husband 🥀

    • I suppose that would be a blessing and a curse. Mixed emotions. I hope you are able to remember more happy times.

    • Yes every I'm reminded how blessed I was to have him in my life 💕

  • There are times when cold rootbeer reminds me of vacations when I was a kid. Our family often went camping in a particular campground in the summer when my dad had his two week vacation. To get to the mountains, we had to drive through some places that were really hot in the summer. It was a time before cars had air conditioning. There was an A&W rootbeer stand just before you started up the grade into the mountains. After driving for what seemed like forever in sweltering heat, we couldn't wait to stop at that place and order tall, frosty mugs of rootbeer. A car hop girl would bring it out to the car on one of those trays that hung off of your window.

I rarely run across a place that has date (milk) shakes. But when I do, they bring back memories of a place in the dessert off of interstate 10 in California that had a couple of giant dinosaurs outside. Those had been built in the 50s when such roadside attractions were popular. As a kid, I was fascinated with dinosaurs, so I was thrilled when we stopped at that place.

    • Those are neat memories

    • Dude, I forgot about A&W... rootbeer float and chili dog. Summer. Thanks for reminding me.

  • Rootbeer - (Bad memory) I was cheated as a kid by my bus driver. I used to have this cute beach keychain and the driver said that if I gave him the keychain, he'd buy me a coke soda. Well it turns out that the soda wasn't coke but rootbeer. And ever since that day, I have a distaste to rootbeer.

  • Some good, some horrendous

  • Yes, definitely!

  • Yes they do. Every time I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich I have flashbacks of my childhood. When I eat lasagna I can hear my grandmother's voice and she died in 1967.

  • The smell of almond extract reminds me of my trip to my nursery school because my mom would gave marzipan on the way there. I always picture the road I was on.

    • That’s a neat memory. Thanks for sharing. :)

  • Smells trigger me not so much taste

  • I've heard it said that smell is the sense most highly tied to memory. I don't know if I believe it, but yes, certain smells will take me someplace. Certain perfumes may remind me of a woman. A certain tea will remind me of a nice Summer afternoon outdoor conversation. Duct tape and blood remind me of the inside of a car trunk. ok, just kidding, but yes, many smells will trigger memories.
I lost my sense of smell for a year or so, then it came back slowly. At first, the only thing I could smell was coffee or diesel oil and everything that I could smell smelled like coffee and diesel oil. Now those smells remind me of times that have nothing to do with either ;)

  • yes. but they aren't usually sexual. i don't like to use those senses so much while being intimate

  • Yes some positive some negative

  • The smell of leather is extremely nostalgic for me because, after my grandfather retired from running a shoe repair shop, he took home the equipment that he owned and continued fixing other people’s shoes long into retirement because his skills were still in such demand — so leather smells like the workshop he had set up in his garage.

  • Loud knocks on my front door makes me think of the war. We lost a lot of good men. A lot of good men.

    • Indeed. 😞

    • Yeah.. The Anglo Boer War was a bad one ☹️☹️

    • Dude, how old are you? 🤔

  • One is jet exhaust. Meant I was going somewhere when I was in the military.

  • That's actually a really good question.
I never really thought about that.
I can't say any smell does.

The sound of trickling water reminds me of sitting on my ex boyfriend dock listening to water run. It was so peaceful
