I love cats and it seems like having a cat for a mascot on a sub would be really good for morale.
I had no idea that cats were allowed on military vessels of any kind, though it certainly makes sense to have a cat at least on non-submarine vessels for control of potential rodent problems.
This is actually a Russian submarine and cats are allowed to roam the docks exactly for rodent control, but some have been adopted by the crews as well!
I live next to a wooded area and I have a cat who patrols my premises for varmint control during the day and evening. He is now an old man so I bring him inside at night for dinner and to sleep in peace and comfort.
