  • I have no idea. That said, we had public breastfeeding in Japan when I was a boy during the 80s in my little rural area of Shimizu. No one saw anything wrong with it, but they also saw nothing wrong with cartoons featuring nudity and even commercials in between where I'd see the breasts and nipples and butt at least of a naked woman taking a bath in between watching kids cartoons like Doraemon:

Yet over time, I saw more Western media like Hollywood films become popular in Japan. And they sexualized nudity just on its own far more than we did, and with that change, I also saw far fewer women breastfeed in public to the point where I don't see any of them doing it anymore.

So I think if people desire a society where women can be topless or breastfeed in public, or whatever else they want, it has to start with a change in the media and what is considered appropriate or inappropriate for children. If people are living in a society where a very possibly accidental wardrobe slip over a Superbowl can infuriate families, and any content featuring a woman's nipples is deemed ill-suited for children even if it's just a woman showering or breastfeeding on the television, then I don't think that society is ready yet for things like topless women walking around let alone women breastfeeding in public.

    • Agreed

    • I think if people want to have a society more tolerant towards certain parts of the body exposed, it has to begin with the media. We can't have a society where someone thinks it's inappropriate to show a picture of nude women or men to children that simultaneously thinks it's okay for people to expose such parts in public settings. I don't really mind either way but I'm left with the thought that a society has to send reasonably consistent messages across for something to be truly adopted as a norm.

  • My answer is no, but not because you should “tuck it away”. Free the nipple is a movement that addresses a very specific oppression and has its own program in how to do that.

I know as a fact that many supporters of Free the nipple are very positive about nudity in general. But it’s not the same agenda. It’s not the same oppression. It would be counterproductive to contaminate the message with a general push for acceptable nudity.

    • True, but later…

  • I’d be ok with everyone going nude. But it’s not gonna happen in the prudish US.

    • Same here

    • Thanks for the mho :)

  • I mean, I'm a nudist and think that nudity should be far less regulated, but even I know that there's a difference between nipples and vulvas/penises.

    • True

  • there are many nudist camps...

    • True

  • Equality for nipples vaginas and penises!!!

    • Yay!!!

  • I think your question is too generalized. I'm a nudist and support public nudity. I don't think public nudity should be illegal. Nowadays, It can be legal in one state and illegal in the neighboring state. If people want to walk around the beach or sidewalk nude, I think they should be able to.

  • I guarantee you don't want ME walking around with my dick hanging out.

    • I don’t care

    • You would if I walked around with my dick hanging ouot.
