Is the American accent attractive or not?

I understand there is a wide variety of American accents, but in general sexy or no? If you’re American then do you prefer it to a foreign accent?

The polls explanation contains a grammatical error. It was bugging me. “There are, not there is” Anyways, thanks everyone for the opinions. I realize that the country has many accents and contains a wide variety of people from all walks of life. So this is a general question and only really calls for a general response. ✌🏻✌🏻

  • There is can be something intriguing and exotic about hearing a foreign accent.

I traveled abroad to Europe during the summer. What stood out to me was not necessarily the different accents but the different mannerisms. Americans interrupt each other in conversation all the time and we don’t even realize it. But I noticed in Germany people usually wait to hear you out before responding. THAT is one thing I don’t like about my culture. We spend more time thinking about what we are going to say next vs. giving the respect to hear the other person out.

But accents are something most people have little control over. It’s taught young.

  • To me, it is just an everyday thing. I think the British accent, Australian accent, Vermontish, Texan, and the slang accent of somewhere like Massachusetts where you can’t really tell what they say (the same for Scottish accent and Irish accent), and New Zealand sound super cool. Medieval English also sound pretty formal and hecks cool. I would lovey love to master all of them. I tried speaking in the British accent before but aside from being told that it doesn’t come off fully correctly, I speak a lot slower when trying to speak in the British accent.

  • When we (Americans) talk with each other, there's nothing to it. When I'm in another country that has citizens that respect us, they might find our accent attractive but I never actually heard them admit that. When I'm in a country whose people resent Americans, my accent, if someone actually notices it, "triggers" them even though I haven't said anything to offend them or their country. The negative bias towards Americans just brings out tension.

    • I get that, but in the case of negative responses I often find that people don’t tend to hate other people based off nationality more the government or military actions of that country. Like just because country x does something, it doesn’t mean that there citizens are to blame and I think a lot of people understand that.

  • Depends on the part of the country they are from: I love a good East coast accent like (NY, NJ or Boston) or an accent from New Orleans. I can’t can’t stand the Midwest accent though (sorry no offense). But really it doesn’t matter where people are from…I was born and raised in California so I always enjoy hearing other people talk that sound different than I do.

    • @EvilAngel114 How you doin? Lol. I'm having way too much fun with this. Have a good night.

    • Lmao with what this question or this site in general

  • There is no such thing as an American accent. That's like saying do you find european accents attactive. It's too vague.

  • Its all *y'all this, y'all that* screaming banshees, *screams* when they see each other

Fk sake annoyin, no wonder *y'all* go around shootin each other... Saves the rest of the world from doin it

    • @brokenheartedx Gosh freakin tarnet, my girl cousin last night does not agree with you're hillbilly slurs madam! LMFAO!!!

    • @brokenheartedx you're so nice. Good luck to you.

    • With more Small Arms than every other nation combined, I invite you to try. I always wanted a summer home that doubles as an Ossuary.

  • I think most people find accents different from there own attractive, so as someone pretty far from the US, yes, they are all sexy

    • Not necessarily. I'm British and I find American accents unpleasant, cheese grater on the ears

    • @Echosoul Good to hear.

    • I present to you exhibit A. A deer's butthole...

  • I've never really cared one way or the other about accents in terms of attraction.

However, as many people here have stated, there are multiple "American" accents. California, Southern, New York, Midwestern, etc, etc, etc.

    • Yes there definitely are a lot of American accents! I always thought that here in California, we had the "neutral" accent. But no, people say that we have an accent... LOL

    • @ArrowheadSW That's how I feel about the Midwestern accent! I've been told it's a bit hillbilly-ish, though! 🤣

    • @awes0meness I know a lady in Minnesota who has that distinct upper midwest accent. She insists that she doesn't have an accent... LOL... So I guess we ALL do. 😂

  • Yes, generally attractive. Some Southern and Appalachian girls get to me with their accent. 😊

  • I love an American accent more than anything. But i like foreign accents as long as theyre speaking English

    • Mainly Southern Twang, Cali, or New Orleans accents. Im not crazy about new yorker accents

    • Not many people are crazy about a NY accent.

    • @Riddler1412 they sound mean lol

  • I know your asking for a general response but they are so varied that a yes or no isn't really feasible.

Like I'm not a fan of the north eastern accents but southern are charming. Midwestern are nice but that Minnesota accent I could do with out dontcha know.

  • Yes they are! I love listening to them.

    • It's like episodes of The Office even with the actors being from other states too the show is set in Pennsylvania 🤪🤪😅☮️

    • @pickedcrisps Well, I've never watched "The Office", but I get your point Lol

  • There's so many accents in America. The ones I like are the Bostonian accent, South Carolinian, and Appalachian Mountains. Love the cultures there too.

  • Not my thing, I prefer European accents :)

  • I prefer to listen to southern accents. Yes, there are plenty of different southern accents, but I like the sound of them in general. They can be both adorable and sexy.

  • The worst. American accents are my absolute least favourite.

Also, why are they so fucking obnoxiously loud? Yeah, we heard you honey. We know you're excited that your girlfriend arrived at the cafe. You don't need to puncture my eardrum in the process of your expression of overly aggrandized and kind of fake joy.

    • Stop bashing Americans, OK?

    • @nicolettexo WE'RE NOT THAT LOUD... WAIT? ARE WE? AM I FRIGGING SCREAMING?

    • @Friendlybro79 definitely a Yank!! haha

  • Neutral-to-attractive, for me.

  • I don’t really care about accents, it’s more about the qualities of a voice that make it attractive to me. Low raspy dominant voices are very sexy. Squeaky voices, not sexy.

I’m assuming people don’t typically think American accents are attractive. In comparison to the Romance languages, American language seems very... country folk? I’m not just referring to the south, just in general, all the hard R’s and A sounds. Such as “barn” and “crank”. It’s just a bit harsh.

  • New jersey accent is hot. I like Australian and British more.. yes, I do know that both have different dialects, but its just more attractive in my opinion

  • I'm an American and while most American accents are fine, there are some that are kind of a turn off. Like a Boston accent or deep southern accent. For me, the most attractive accent I've heard is Australian accents. That's the good stuff!

    • I get the Boston one but southern is the best ijs

    • @Joshua0213 oh, Southern is fine. A cute Southern Belle is just divine. I mean backwoods deep southern. I mean "Can you enunciate?" Southern.

  • Who can hear their own accent? I can't. I had no idea that I had an accent, until I met with a group of Kiwis from down under. One of the ladies said: "Oh, my you Americans have the most lovely 'sing-song' accent" What the hell is "sing-song?"
I turned around to see who she was talking too, but I guess she was talking to me! What?
    I don't have no stinking accent, I'm not a foreigner. :)

  • American accent is the baseline that makes every other accent interesting. Not good not bad, you don't notice it. Many fictional universes have the concept of "common speech". American English is exactly that. Even if it wasn't plain and boring, every time any program in the world autocorrects my instinctive British spelling to the American version, I can't help but think "Oh, there we go. The non-magical people strike again."

  • Americans are often monotone, but mostly neglect to enunciate.

    • LOL Neglect to enunciate? Sounds like some of the musicians who perform in town. They sing but don't enunciate the words they are singing.

    • @ArrowheadSW Observation. 😉 At least with musicians you get a beat to go along with it. lol

    • @dustybiker I always laugh when I see it. You go out someplace for dinner or whatever, and there is a live musician singing. They are singing the notes fine but there is no enunciation in the words they are singing. It's like, "What IS this?" Makes me think they are smoking something ahead of time... LOL

  • Not really a bonus to a person's attractiveness but it doesn't bother me eithet so I guess if she's already attractive her accent will not change much
