    The reason it's dangerous to be out after dark, especially alone, is because CRIMINALS tend to prefer to operate in the dark - it's easier to take someone by surprise (always an advantage for a criminal) and more difficult to be identified in low light (again, another solid advantage for criminal activity). Traffic is also lighter at night in most places than during the day, so if they plan to escape from the area, that's also an advantage.

    The other threat is that a certain portion of the population is FAR more likely to be drunk or high at night - especially after midnight - and thus behave in ways that they normally wouldn't sober. I'm not in any way excusing their behavior, but the fact is that people tend to drink and use drugs at night far more than in the day.

    So, between criminals (meaning: people who regularly commit crimes as a normal part of their life) and heavy substance users, you have two groups of people that are far more likely to be dangerous at night than during the day.

    • Darkness seems to relax the inhibitions of both genders. If you ever need to have a break up talk with someone who is borderline for self-control, do it during the day and they are more likely to maintain their self-control. (Do it in a public place, too!)

    it does not mean at all that men generally have the tendency to rape people at night. night is just prime time for general crime.
