Girls, do you feel like when you're on your period it's always a big deal? Or does it blend in pretty well with your daily lives?

I'm a guy.

I'm afraid to ask women IRL any questions about menstrual cycle in fear of ticking them off. So if my question is wildly inaccurate I absolutely apologize.

Recently I got to thinking how my friends who are girls appear to brush off a period as if it was another trip to the restroom whenever I hang out with them. From my perspective, for the most part being on your period isn't always a life-altering event where you need to pause everything. They are still feeling alright and continue with daily activities as normal. I notice this with both my sisters as well. They seem to just carry on with normal activities as if they aren't on their periods, and simply use the restroom whenever they need to.

Is what I said mostly typically true to say? I realize things like cramping could occur but it doesn't seem to happen with every period.

Superb Opinion

  • its not always a big deal. It really depends on the period... sometimes it hurrts majorly, sometimes not at all. Experiences vary. A lot of girls also take painkillers.
Also sometimes it doesn't have to hurt a lot but it can be uncomfortable or just make you feel icky about ysf like you are dirty.

  • I do get cramps where I would much rather lay down and hug myself than go about my day, but I pretend like there's nothing going on, because I know that I have to live with this for the next 25 years or so, and I gotta not let it disrupt my life.
I avoid going getting myself too worked up physically though, because I have anemia, and I could literally faint if I do that while I'm loosing blod.

  • For me, there are a couple of rough days. The other days are more minor annoyance. We have to blend it into normal life. What choice is there?

    • How would you define a rough day for yourself? Anything in particular that makes you say "okay we're not doing that today"?

    • @alosttraveler A rough day is when I have bad cramps. Some girls have them and they are debilitating. I'm not saying mine are like that, but they are bad enough that it is uncomfortable and feel somewhat miserable. To your second part, really depends on "what" it is that I'm doing. Not calling off work because of it. May skip out on shopping though. Comes down to being practical about stuff when feeling crappy.

    • Okay. Yeah I feel bad for my women co-workers sometimes. We're in retail and walking around constantly. I overhear every once in a while that they're on it and can't imagine what it feels like trying to endure. But people need money so ya gotta stick it through lol...

  • It really differs from girl to girl. For me personally I don’t get cramps or heavy flows because I’ve been on the pill for a couple years and it’s really settled it right down. It’s like any other day but with a little bit of blood, no big deal.

Some girls really struggle with it tho. Bad cramps, heavy flows, lasts for weeks at a time. Mine was like that for the first year or so before going on the pill.

  • Same as every question asked about periods on here (there is a search function folks) periods affect each person differently. Some hardly notice it, some are bedridden from it.

  • It’s always a huge deal and is extremely disruptive, both during the day and at night. It’s impossible to get a good night’s sleep because of having to make bathroom trips during the night to change sanitary products. During the day, frequent bathroom trips are also needed, which can cause problems at school or work.

  • It's a big deal for me. It affects me in different ways.

  • The week before my menstrual I'm extremely moody (we're talking about crying a lot and I mean A LOT i don't know why). Then the whole week is cramping, bloated to the point I feel like a blimp, migraines, soreness, and fatigue (thank God for Midol). I also get cravings of Taco Bell for some reason I don't know it just happens. Day one the flow is extremely light but come day 2-3 and it's extremely heavy and painful to the point I really do not think I can go to work.

  • It's a big deal because you need extra time taking care of menstrual hygiene. My productivity gets halted cause i am too tired to focus

  • For me I carry on like nothing is happening cause I don’t have any issues with my period, however for many girls/ women they experience really bad period cramps that can actually stop them from being able to go to work, some girls/ women get period cramps so bad that they pass out
