  • Semen normally smells like ammonia, bleach, or chlorine, and test slightly sweet or salty. (I regularly give blowjob to my husband and always swallow – if he cum in my mouth.) Semen is about 1 percent sperm and 99 percent other compounds, enzymes, proteins, and minerals. Many of these substances are alkaline. Foul smell of semen can be a clue to a health issue, such as an STI. If the urethra is filled with discharge from an infection like chlamydia or gonorrhea, that discharge can mix with the semen, giving it an foul odor. Eating certain foods can change the smell of semen and it is definitely possible that certain foods can affect semen’s smell; eating citrus fruits and pineapple make it a little sweeter.

Semen is the cloudy white bodily fluid that is emitted from the urethra and out of the penis during ejaculation. It consists of motile sperm cells (called spermatozoa) and a nutrient-rich fluid called seminal fluid. The purpose of the seminal fluid is to both transport the sperm cells and enhance their fertilization abilities.

Sperm cells are produced in the testicles, they enter the epididymis where they mature, stored in the epididymis before they make their way up a long open tube called the vas deferens. The tip of the vas deferens connects with the ejaculatory ducts where it combines with the rest of the fluid that makes ‘cum’ or semen or "ejaculate." A small portion of seminal fluid consists of secretions from the Cowper's glands. This fluid lubricates the urethra and neutralizes any acidity, allowing the sperm to travel easily. Up to 30% of semen is produced by the prostate gland, is the primary source of acid phosphatase, citric acid, inositol, calcium, zinc, and magnesium. The prostate also releases enzymes that work to liquefy semen within 30 minutes after ejaculation and it allows the sperm to enter the cervix and travel upstream in the female reproductive system in an orderly fashion, with the ultimate goal of finding an egg to fertilize.

Up to 75% of seminal fluid is produced by the seminal vesicles contributing components like fructose to nourishes the sperm cells, and prostaglandins to trigger the contraction of vaginal muscles in order to propel the sperm up the vaginal canal and through the cervix. Clotting factors are also present in the fluid secreted by the seminal vesicles. This makes the semen clump together, forming a jelly-like consistency right after ejaculation.

Semen often has a chlorine-like smell and tastes slightly sweet due to its high content of fructose. That being said, the taste of semen tends to change slightly every time and from person to person. Semen is not as simple as you may have thought. It has lots of components to it, all of which play a role in enhancing reproduction—your sperm reaching an ovulated egg. One more thing important to note is that the fluid part is not absolutely critical for fertilization, as in intracytoplasmic sperm injection in which a single sperm is injected into an egg.

  • A lot of people report semen as having a bleach smell don't worry about it completely normal. The reason why is that there is a snall amount of ammonia in semen.

    • Gotcha thanks, didn’t think I need to see a dr like someone suggested

    • Different people will have different levels of scent fur to varying amounts of different chemicals in theirs, and sone have a more accurate sense of smell. So some people may never notice it, or dont have such a strong snell to theirs. You're fine.

  • My semen only does this when I ejaculate a second or third time in a row. Perhaps try ejaculating less frequently to see if it dissapated.

    • I don’t ejaculate frequently

    • Perhaps you should incorporate more sugary foods into your diet.
