Well, the first girl I ever had sex with was coming on to me a couple weeks before we DID have sex but I wasn't exactly sure of it, at first and, besides, she was married to my new best friend so, I wasn't about to steal her away from him. When she told me that she was leaving him soon, anyway, because he beats her up, that changed my mind about that.
That would make things awkward and most likely ruin the friendship in the end. It could be he is already getting some else ware and respecting you enough to not double dip.
friends with benefits also tends to lead to one of you falling for the other, and if the feeling isn't mutual that definitely makes it pretty awkward.
There is lots of other reasons it could be, if your as close as you say you could ask him about it, in a friendly way just to see what he says.
