Why do you think the U. S. chose to make prostitution, sex workers illegal?, Most western countries are not like that?, Why is the U. S. like that?

It's legal in most of Europe, and Australia as well, I know it's legal in Canada and Mexico, why do you think the United States chose to make this industry illegal?

What's the mindset and mentality of the US government as to why they wanted to make this industry illegal?

I've heard some speculation that it's due to radical or Evangelical Christians that motivated the US to make this illegal.

As far as I know, the only areas where it's legal in the US is some parts of Nevada.

  • The US was originally founded by religious extremists - groups with extremely strict interpretations of the Bible, who were considered odd-balls in Europe at the time. Pilgrims, Puritans, Amish, Huguenots, and other groups risked their lives (with many actually losing lives) to travel half way around the world and be dropped off in a strange land with almost nothing, having to make their way or die, in order to be able to practice their strict religions.

And while later waves of immigration came from more moderate religious groups, the US retained an undercurrent of strict religious practices for centuries, and that informed all kinds of things in society, but especially attitudes about sex. The US remains less comfortable with sex and nudity than Europe or most other western nations, but ironically more comfortable with violence than Europe.

Still, prostitution and brothels were very common throughout the US until the late 1800s and the early 1900s - around the Industrial Revolution in other words - when groups of mostly older and highly religious women pushed society to outlaw prostitution and close down brothels. Their success emboldened them to go on to push for a prohibition of alcohol in the 1910s.

  • By putting "radical or Evangelical Christians" just shows that you like immoral things and dislike anyone that doesn't support immoral things."

As for your question, some of the USA's laws don't make sense. For example, prostitution is illegal, but if you film it so it is porn then it somehow becomes legal. Also it is illegal to marry more than one person, but you can be married and have sex with more than 100 other people and it is completely legal.

Some laws here are contradictory and illogical.

  • Probably relates back to Christianity and the damage done by shunning sex.

    • And blaming the moral failings of men on the women who "tempted" them.

  • An echo of the puritanical founders. Somehow the US has remained more religious than almost all other Western democracies.

  • Christian tradition. These other places are post-Christian. As a Libertarian, I think sex work should be legal, licensed, regulated and taxed, not so different from physical therapy. Regulation would have to watch for drug abuse and sex trafficking.

  • Historically, the original European settlers of the United States were puritanical Christians, and that general philosophy about sex and prostitution has continued to this day.

  • We're a nation of prudes!! Too many of us still believe in tat fairy tale book, the bible, which says that selling your body for sex is wrong. Therefore, it's a law that you can't do that! In the meantime, it also says you should never eat shrimp but, that's not illegal! Pussy taste like shrimp so, you COULD always say that you just thought you were going after shrimp and your dick just happened to fall into the hole where the smell was coming from and you kept TRYING to pull it out but it kept getting sucked right back n until it was too late!

  • Because 'Murca is heavily influenced with CHRISTIAN BULLSH! T

  • Because once upon a time, America still had moral standards of decency.

  • I think you mean brothel. But i think it’s because its dangerous work.

  • Nevada only makes it legal because they think the decision is a municipal decision. Other states make it a statewide decision. There is no national law regarding it. I think the reason is because most people think prostitution is not a choice.

  • tax. they're not taxed, therefore, they're illegal

  • Ironically our separation of church/state has incurred more puritanical laws. I beleive the US is the most religious g20 country…

  • It's legal here in Nevada.

    • Yeah but I wonder why not in the rest of the states, and isn't it only legal in certain areas or regions of Nevada, not all of Nevada right?

    • Not all of it but not too far from the populated areas.

  • American government have other good ethical (may be not) ways to collect money.

  • Perhaps The United States is more Christian, More God Fearing.

  • Because you are religious extremists.

  • The US is against small business owners, if the big companies like Walmart got into it then it would be legal.

  • Probably because they just don’t want it near them in there neighborhoods, American is a bit prudish with that and not as open with sexuality. The government would make money on it too because they could tax it but too many people in high places are against it
