Should children be taught the negative effects of watching porn?

I think they should !! If the average age kids are watching porn is as young as 13 I think it’s important for children to be taught how dangerous porn is and how it damages the brain. Especially when watched at such a young age.

Porn companies know they profit off of getting kids addicted when they’re young so they have long term customers for life.

Porn normalizes the abuse of women which can and does translate to the abuse of girls in real life by their male peers.

According to a 2010 study that analyzed 304 scenes from best-selling pornography videos, almost 90% of scenes contained physical aggression, while nearly 50% contained verbal aggression, primarily in the form of name-calling. Targets of these displays of aggression were overwhelmingly women and either showed pleasure or neutrality in response to the aggression. A meta-analysis published in Aggressive Behavior confirmed this link, and went on further to state that there was a significant correlation between sexually violent pornography and attitudes supporting violence against women. This correlation supports findings suggesting that increased pornography use has an influence on non-conscious responses to stimuli, meaning that we are both consciously and unconsciously being conditioned by pornography in a negative way.

More people need to be talking about this. I feel like this is a very unpopular opinion for some reason

  • I haven't seen the study you're referring to, so this is just some food for that (though, keep in mind that studies can have agendas and will word things in certain ways or outright forgo information).


    Saying porn normalizes abuse of women (even if we assume most porn contains abusive depictions) is like saying the Grand Theft Auto game normalizes murdering, robbing banks, and stealing cars. But how many people who play Grand Theft Auto are murdering, robbing banks, or stealing cars?


    Additionally, I question whether paid pornographic material is an accurate depiction of what the average porno is like. I'd imagine a lot of the sexually deviant content is more likely to be behind a pay wall than normal content is, as it's more specialized and thus a commodity to those who like it. If you just go on pornhub and look at the most watched videos, they all seem to be pretty normal and not including abuse-like behavior. That's not to say you'll never see it, but it doesn't seem to be prevalent.


    (There's also something to be said about the anti-pornography movements you've seen around 2010, I'm sure that had influence on their findings)


    I'd also oppose the idea that aggression or abuse-like behavior in porn is a bad thing in the first place. In the same way that violence in movies isn't bad, aggression in porn isn't bad. There's a clear distinction between our entertainment mediums and how we interact with the real world. 99% of the people who watch movies containing violence don't go out and the violently attack people. And even having appeal in violence or abuse isn't bad, unless it is unconsensually imposed onto unwilling individuals. For example, people who like martial arts (violence) aren't wrong for liking violence if they act morally and only indulge with a consenting individual (such as when two martial artists enter a ring to fight each other). In this case, partaking in violence isn't bad. Similarly, if both a man and a women (or any other relationship) like sexually aggressive or abusive behavior, it isn't wrong if they both consensually indulge in it with one another. It would be wrong if that martial artist went off and randomly attacked people, and it would be wrong for that man to abuse some random woman.     • As another short, side-comment. People watch spy movies, or mafia movies, where people kill people all the time. These movies don't cause people to go kill people. And regarding this meta analysis confirming this "link," how do we know that isn't correlation and rather than causation? A "link" isn't necessarily causation. People used to think that sitting close to the TV caused vision problems in kids, but it turns out that kids who had vision problems would sit close to the TV because they couldn't see it very well at a distance. So sitting close to the TV was correlated to their vision problems, but not the causation of their vision problems. As another example, when people eat ice cream, they're WAY more likely to have a heat stroke. But it turns out that this is correlation, not causation. In the summer, it's hot. Since it's hot, people are more likely to have ice cream. And since it's hot, people are also more likely to have a heat stroke. If you look at the data pertaining to ice cream and heat strokes, it could look like ice cream causes heat strokes. But it doesn't, heat causes both of them. (Response continued in comment below)

    • So similarly to those two, how do you know that real-world sexual violence is caused by sexually aggressive pornography and not just sexually aggressive/violent people seeking out sexually aggressive porn due to the appeal in sexual aggression they already have? And even if most people who "support violence against women" (I wonder if purely consensual toleplay between two consenting people counts towards that) like sexually aggressive or abusive porn, that doesn't mean most people who watch intense porn have that opinion. Let me use an analogy. 99% of gun violence is done by people who own guns. But 1% of gun owners partake in gun violence. Just because 99% of gun violence is done by people who own guns doesn't meant that owning guns is comparable to partaking in gun violence. And unless I'm mistaken, Mia Khalifa's stance regards the porn industry and how business is handled, which certainly can be problematic, not the affects those pornographic depicts has on people's psychology. That'd be like an actor saying "my boss forced me to perform a risky jump in a movie that I didn't want to, so people who watch me perform that risky jump in the movie will be psychology affected."   • Very interesting, relevant, and still difficult question. Children are at the beginning of their life, and as such eager to learn all there is to learn about life. Porn contains often a distorted image of what sex is about, but on the other a very small percentage of porn movies could be considered interestingly informative.

    Thus, I'd say children asking about porn should indeed be given correct information, and I mean not only about the negative side, which is rather hypocrite. Also, I think one should avoid punishing a child for viewing porn. In this latter case the opportunity should be taken to give informative relevant information.

    The real difficulty in teaching honestly children about porn, is WHO is going to take that responsibility, and that's not an easy choice to make. At home, I guess the parents or an older sister or brother could do the job, but that's nevertheless not a guarantee.

    Keeping children away from porn is neither an option, because porn does exist anyway, and one day they will be confronted with it. This problem should not be handled too lightly.

  • Unfortunately the underpinning aspect of your main study is correlation. In science, correlation is not causation. There are also studies which show a significant decrease in violent abuse directed towards women in states with a higher per capita access to porn, statistics are great in that you can use the same numbers and get two completely different answers.

    Yes I believe we should educate children and reinforce their understanding that fantasy is not reality and does not always reflect real life, something that thankfully most children have a good grasp on before their early teens anyway.

  • Yes, I do. I don't think porn is bad (because I'm a libertarian), but I do think it's bad FOR you. Meaning it's not the best thing psychologically. Since sex is such a wonderful and amazing thing, it will blow your socks off when you're exposed to it. But I don't think it's helpful for a person to be exposed to sex when you're not ready to have sex. Because then there's a disconnect between the real world and the imaginary. So therefore, someone who isn't going to have sex anytime soon will just have the entirety of their sexual energy blasted directly into the realm of the imaginary. So sex becomes associated with fantasy only. Which is fine, I guess; but it's still not healthy for that individual person. (Then again, I also don't think it's healthy to deprive your imagination so that the entirety of your sexual energy is blasted into potential real-life encounters. Especially if you're a girl, because guys can easily take advantage of that -- that desire.)

    This is just my opinion. Feel free to share your views if you disagree; I don't mind.

    (But for you personally, I would definitely recommend against it. Especially since you're so young. Because I have heard that it can affect girls' self-esteem.)
