Should children be taught the negative effects of watching porn?

I think they should !! If the average age kids are watching porn is as young as 13 I think it’s important for children to be taught how dangerous porn is and how it damages the brain. Especially when watched at such a young age.

Porn companies know they profit off of getting kids addicted when they’re young so they have long term customers for life.

Porn normalizes the abuse of women which can and does translate to the abuse of girls in real life by their male peers.

According to a 2010 study that analyzed 304 scenes from best-selling pornography videos, almost 90% of scenes contained physical aggression, while nearly 50% contained verbal aggression, primarily in the form of name-calling. Targets of these displays of aggression were overwhelmingly women and either showed pleasure or neutrality in response to the aggression. Some studies that have shown nearly 90% of pornography depicts violence

A meta-analysis published in Aggressive Behavior confirmed this link, and went on further to state that there was a significant correlation between sexually violent pornography and attitudes supporting violence against women. This correlation supports findings suggesting that increased pornography use has an influence on non-conscious responses to stimuli, meaning that we are both consciously and unconsciously being conditioned by pornography in a negative way.

More people need to be talking about this. I feel like this is a very unpopular opinion for some reason

Many ex porn stars like Mia khalifa also voice their negative experiences as well;

Here are some videos I like that talk about the realities of porn & sex work in general >>

Notice how all the men are in these comments exposing themselves. A lot of men are addicted to pork and don’t see women as human beings. Just objects for their sexual desire. Take notes ladies ‼️

  • I haven't seen the study you're referring to, so this is just some food for that (though, keep in mind that studies can have agendas and will word things in certain ways or outright forgo information).

Saying porn normalizes abuse of women (even if we assume most porn contains abusive depictions) is like saying the Grand Theft Auto game normalizes murdering, robbing banks, and stealing cars. But how many people who play Grand Theft Auto are murdering, robbing banks, or stealing cars?

Additionally, I question whether paid pornographic material is an accurate depiction of what the average porno is like. I'd imagine a lot of the sexually deviant content is more likely to be behind a pay wall than normal content is, as it's more specialized and thus a commodity to those who like it. If you just go on pornhub and look at the most watched videos, they all seem to be pretty normal and not including abuse-like behavior. That's not to say you'll never see it, but it doesn't seem to be prevalent.

(There's also something to be said about the anti-pornography movements you've seen around 2010, I'm sure that had influence on their findings)

I'd also oppose the idea that aggression or abuse-like behavior in porn is a bad thing in the first place. In the same way that violence in movies isn't bad, aggression in porn isn't bad. There's a clear distinction between our entertainment mediums and how we interact with the real world. 99% of the people who watch movies containing violence don't go out and the violently attack people. And even having appeal in violence or abuse isn't bad, unless it is unconsensually imposed onto unwilling individuals. For example, people who like martial arts (violence) aren't wrong for liking violence if they act morally and only indulge with a consenting individual (such as when two martial artists enter a ring to fight each other). In this case, partaking in violence isn't bad. Similarly, if both a man and a women (or any other relationship) like sexually aggressive or abusive behavior, it isn't wrong if they both consensually indulge in it with one another. It would be wrong if that martial artist went off and randomly attacked people, and it would be wrong for that man to abuse some random woman. But it's not wrong if it's consensual.(Response continued in comment below) re-state://background_color_rgba (0, 0, 0, 0), font_color_rgb (77, 77, 77), justifyLeft

    • As another short, side-comment. People watch spy movies, or mafia movies, where people kill people all the time. These movies don't cause people to go kill people. And regarding this meta analysis confirming this "link," how do we know that isn't correlation and rather than causation? A "link" isn't necessarily causation. People used to think that sitting close to the TV caused vision problems in kids, but it turns out that kids who had vision problems would sit close to the TV because they couldn't see it very well at a distance. So sitting close to the TV was correlated to their vision problems, but not the causation of their vision problems. As another example, when people eat ice cream, they're WAY more likely to have a heat stroke. But it turns out that this is correlation, not causation. In the summer, it's hot. Since it's hot, people are more likely to have ice cream. And since it's hot, people are also more likely to have a heat stroke. If you look at the data pertaining to ice cream and heat strokes, it could look like ice cream causes heat strokes. But it doesn't, heat causes both of them. (Response continued in comment below)

    • So similarly to those two, how do you know that real-world sexual violence is caused by sexually aggressive pornography and not just sexually aggressive/violent people seeking out sexually aggressive porn due to the appeal in sexual aggression they already have? And even if most people who "support violence against women" (I wonder if purely consensual toleplay between two consenting people counts towards that) like sexually aggressive or abusive porn, that doesn't mean most people who watch intense porn have that opinion. Let me use an analogy. 99% of gun violence is done by people who own guns. But 1% of gun owners partake in gun violence. Just because 99% of gun violence is done by people who own guns doesn't meant that owning guns is comparable to partaking in gun violence. And unless I'm mistaken, Mia Khalifa's stance regards the porn industry and how business is handled, which certainly can be problematic, not the affects those pornographic depicts has on people's psychology. That'd be like an actor saying "my boss forced me to perform a risky jump in a movie that I didn't want to, so people who watch me perform that risky jump in the movie will be psychology affected." (As usual, you'll have to ignore the weird code-speak at the end. It does that sometimes when I paste stuff from my Samsung Notes app).

  • Very interesting, relevant, and still difficult question. Children are at the beginning of their life, and as such eager to learn all there is to learn about life. Porn contains often a distorted image of what sex is about, but on the other a very small percentage of porn movies could be considered interestingly informative.

Thus, I'd say children asking about porn should indeed be given correct information, and I mean not only about the negative side, which is rather hypocrite. Also, I think one should avoid punishing a child for viewing porn. In this latter case the opportunity should be taken to give informative relevant information.

The real difficulty in teaching honestly children about porn, is WHO is going to take that responsibility, and that's not an easy choice to make. At home, I guess the parents or an older sister or brother could do the job, but that's nevertheless not a guarantee.

Keeping children away from porn is neither an option, because porn does exist anyway, and one day they will be confronted with it. This problem should not be handled too lightly.

  • watching porn yes they should be made aware of this, a sex scene, I can only go by what I have seen, I saw my parents having sex accidently when I was young, but knowing that they were happy doing what they did, was how can I put it, good, they kissed and laughed almost every day,

  • Yes they should be however curiosity will win over and they will watch to just to see what it is all about and then they will get horny and on and on it goes.

  • Unfortunately the underpinning aspect of your main study is correlation. In science, correlation is not causation. There are also studies which show a significant decrease in violent abuse directed towards women in states with a higher per capita access to porn, statistics are great in that you can use the same numbers and get two completely different answers.

Yes I believe we should educate children and reinforce their understanding that fantasy is not reality and does not always reflect real life, something that thankfully most children have a good grasp on before their early teens anyway.

  • Our nation's children are being sexualized at an early age and this is illegal and a form of child abuse. It must end immediately.

    • I agree with this

    • I agree. Look at how the popular categories in pornography is always teen? And women that look underage are popular porn stars? Porn is enabling predatory behavior

    • I personally think porn should be completely stopped. Sex work is immoral. Men shouldn’t have unlimited access to violate women’s bodies

  • Of course. Just look around GaG. There are too many dudes here who watch porn and forego putting in the practice and the work at being social. It leads them down some really dark paths.

  • Of course and I don't know if they are, but its not like they'll believe it or take it serious. I know porn can be very destructive.

  • What negative effects? Where's the real data, not just a bunch of assumptions.

  • Sex education should start at birth. And taught everything! There are many things they should understand not just porn not just bad but good like its ok to masturbate.

    • I agree, also not teaching your children sex Ed younger can actually make them vulnerable to predators. How can a child ever tell you they are being abused if you normalize not respecting your child’s personal boundaries already and fail to teach your child about their body

    • masterbating is natural and shouldn’t be stigmatized. The issue is when media like porn weaponizes a child’s curiosity when it comes to sexuality

    • Very well observed. You're pointing to an important aspect of sex education.

  • Most definitely

  • Porn doesn't damage the brain, and most porn does not contain "aggression".
Stop fearmongering. And stop taking every "study" as valid.

Most studies are non replicable or based off of inaccurate assumptions or scewed opinions.

Either way. the material's audience is 18+, so if anyone younger is looking at it, it's because they chose to after already knowing they were told not to.

Which yes, lots of kids do, and in spite of that, they're fine.

    • 90% of porn depicts violence against women? And you seriously believe watching content that normalized violence against women isn’t going to fuck men up? There are literal stories of men who were never interested in children becoming pedos after watching porn. Websites like porn huh profit off of videos with literal rape victims yet you still support companies like that? And your reasoning isn’t in the realm of logic. We should ban porn, the content isn’t brining anything good to humanity and the sex workers that make the pork are being exploited and abused. All sex work needs to end period

    • "90% of porn depicts violence against women?" Answer: no, 90% of porn depicts no violence at all. Your entire point is based on complete slander. "There are literal stories of men who were never interested in children becoming pedos after watching porn." Answer: Sorry but again, thats a completely bogus claim. Sexuality is rooted in a person genetics, you cannot become a pedophile, just like you cannot become gay, or a furry, you are born attracted to whatever it is you are attracted to, nothing you witness or experience in your lifetime will ever influence what arouses you, and what doesn't. The outcomes of how a person responds to any given stimuli is predeterminate. "And your reasoning isn’t in the realm of logic." Answer: Sorry, but yes it is, you on the otherhand, are stuck buying into a series of lies you read or heard on the internet. "We should ban porn" Answer: No, we shouldn't. "the content isn’t brining anything good to humanity" Answer: Actually it has done a ton of good, both educationally, and in terms of sexual safety, as well as other token one shot things as promotions. "and the sex workers that make the pork are being exploited and abused." Answer: No, most porn is consentual and high paying and does not involve abuse of any kind. "All sex work needs to end period" Answer: Tell that to the many porn actors, web cam streamers, etc, who enjoy their work, they would quite quickly tell you to fuck off.

    • I wonder why you are going to such lengths to spread lies, seems pointless to me.

  • Shit this kinda tough because I first ran into porn when I was 8. I mean it make sense, the internet made it easy for us to find shit faster... Including that. I think it's a good idea, but if done right. None of that shit that makes them be curious to look at it themselves.

  • The more you try and stop them, the more they want to try. Better to educate them and take the fun out of it. They will find a way to watch it. It is too easy to and You cannot block everything

  • Ah... Why should children know about porn in the first place? In sexual education children's are thought to know their body parts, beside learning selfcare (take care of their hygiene) and signs of abuse (psychological, physical, sexual).

Porn addiction can be thought to teenagers. To kids? Hell no. Children are not ready for such topics.

    • The average age that people start watching porn is 13 ?

    • If you’re against education than we need to ban porn

    • Porn should be banned anyways

    • Show All
  • Yes, I do. I don't think porn is bad (because I'm a libertarian), but I do think it's bad FOR you. Meaning it's not the best thing psychologically. Since sex is such a wonderful and amazing thing, it will blow your socks off when you're exposed to it. But I don't think it's helpful for a person to be exposed to sex when you're not ready to have sex. Because then there's a disconnect between the real world and the imaginary. So therefore, someone who isn't going to have sex anytime soon will just have the entirety of their sexual energy blasted directly into the realm of the imaginary. So sex becomes associated with fantasy only. Which is fine, I guess; but it's still not healthy for that individual person. (Then again, I also don't think it's healthy to deprive your imagination so that the entirety of your sexual energy is blasted into potential real-life encounters. Especially if you're a girl, because guys can easily take advantage of that -- that desire.)

This is just my opinion. Feel free to share your views if you disagree; I don't mind.

(But for you personally, I would definitely recommend against it. Especially since you're so young. Because I have heard that it can affect girls' self-esteem.)

    • @caitycat21 I'm sorry I didn't fully read your post before. 90% of the scenes had physical aggression? 😲 Wow. That's crazy. I am honestly shocked. And I've seen a LOT of porn! (Sorry!)

  • Yes also average for kids watching porn is more so around 8-10

  • BS, there's no negative effect. I started watching porn when I was 8 or 9. That didn't turn me into a monster, it only helped me knowing how to use my tongue more effectively and make a girl moan.

  • I started watching porn about 22 years ago and I have NEVER objectified a girl/lady.
I'd rather only masturbate for the rest of my head life than even thinking about having sex with a woman when sje is vulnerable.
But the most ironic part with this, I have only been objectified myself by the other sex than myself.
If you feel like a discussion in this subject is needed, do NOT do it in a sensitive fucked up way, and do NOT even think about going fully ballistic the other even more fucked up way which is abuse.
Do it on your own adult and mature level, in a calm, objectively neutral level so they do not end up as biased in any fucking direction, applies to both males and females.
And while we are in this topic include EVERYONE despite if you agree or disagree with them it is only from that we truly learn from eachother.
I see all my fellow humanbeings as ONE race, I see genders as biological despite what others might think.
Got offended by my comment? Go fucking binge watch South Park, Family Guy or even a really disgustingly fucked up movie which is The Woman.
I lay NO harm in this comment what so EVER, this comment is NOT towards ANYONE at all.
    I only spoke my mind.
If you already have read this far in this rant I want you to know that no matter who you are as a person, I believe in you are no matter if no one else does, because I believe that anyone is capable of change for the better.
Have a wonderful day and keep being your awesome wonderful self you are a savage unique legend no matter what someone else would say!
You are extra beutiful today and you sparkle!
Take care! Love and respect and acceptance is the only way forward, combined with honesty.
Your God still loves EVERYONE, so you could too!❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
What even is hate? Can anyone even define that word without deleting the definition?
    I love my fellow humanbeings!

    • I See what u saying man but the objectification thing is a nuanced effect and more of a soul problem it could happen wan you dont even know it

    • @WilliamPamer446 I never said that it could not happen, I only wrote from my own point of view with GENERALISATION. I still stand for everything I said in my first comment and it is only my honest opinion.

    • Watching porn is only a problem if you want to treat another humanbeing as a sexdoll and want to physically harm anyone. But humanity is so deeply fucked up already that it is beyond improvement. If anyone think they can learn to know me from comments on social media needs to look in the mirror and try to say I am living in denial! and think about how it feels.

  • All the one sided, sexist analysis aside, yes of course they should be taught to avoid it and told that it is both unrealistic and addictive, much like drugs.

  • Honestly I think this is a good idea as a ex porn addict. It truly has some extremely negative effects to the mind and body. Watching porn is not good, better to have sex instead.

  • Yes and in some parts of the world we do.
Porn has pros and cons, regulation is getting stronger on the internet and people are becoming more aware and informed in general.
Also realize that we know smoking directly causes lung cancer, yet people still do it. Informing will only helps so much, people will find a way.

  • Yes.

    • Its actually kind of scary

  • no, don't agree at all. Porn is marketed and based on what men actually desire, it's not porn telling men what to desire. Women hate porn because it impacts their ability to make men their financial slaves

    • You’re the biggest incel on this platform. You don’t even like real women, go fuck your anime body pillow like the loser you are

    • What you say about women is rather unfair. Porn is certainly marketed, but women are no doubt in most movies objectified. The image porn conveys about sex is mostly distorted. On the other hand I know that many women hate porn because they feel as if they were not able to satisfy their partner. The truth is not black or white. Children being at the beginning of their life, porn teaches them wrong values which they will possibly take for granted. That's marketing strategy: create needs to create a market. The best way to create a need is to build on a basically existing one. Wrong values and distorted expectations in real life are side effects of that marketing strategy...
