Why does Las Vegas et all the water they need but crop growers only get 25% of their usual alotment?

This is Lake Mead, the lowest it has been in 50 years. Hoover Dam can't even make electricity. Who said climate change is bogus?

  • Climate change is real - and has been going on for billions of years - long before humans existed. Climate change is also happening on the other planets in our solar system - I guess there are too many SUVs on Mars.

The REAL problem is that, more than 100 years ago, when the government was considering building the Hoover dam, they hired the most knowledgeable water management guy on the planet to do a study - and then completely ignored his findings and instead based their estimates on how much water would be available based on then-recent rainfall - which, at the time, was a record amount of rainfall and not at all typical.

As a result, we've built up huge population centers in the middle of deserts, just assuming - despite the science - that we'd have enough water for them. That was foolish, and now we're paying the price for that hubris.

    • I believe that underwater town had been a Mormon community that had to vacate because of the rising water.

  • This may come as a surprise but Nevada is a desert. Deserts by definition are dry and devoid of water.

Compare that to a place like Michigan or Wisconsin, where it rains every day and there's 15,000 lakes. (I'm not kidding).

"Climate change" doesn't make water magically dissappear. It evaporates and rains elsewhere. The Mojave dried up a long time before humanity came along.

    • If you ever drove through Las Vegas you would see fountains everywhere. If you drive through central California you would see parched fields of no crops. What is more important, food or gambling? And then they tear down dams so fish can spawn. Go figure.

    • I'm curious why you'd think there'd be crops in a desert. I actually didn't think Nevada had any real agriculture. On account of it being a desert.

    • I'm not talking crops, but water usage. Did you not read the question? Everybody who lives there has a pool and all the water they need. Meanwhile we in California don't have enough to grow crops that supplies half of the US with vegetables. Then people wonder why prices for fresh produce has gone up.

  • How much revenue does Vegas generate and how much do investors make out there? There’s your answer. It’s probably time to start investing in desalination plants out west.

  • Vegas is basically the commerce center for the whole state. They own all the politicians. Who cares if we starve to death as long as people can gamble.

  • I haven’t been there in 24 years but that’s really bad

  • Welcome to climate change, republicans. Now you're starting to wake up to the REALITY OF THE WORLD

    • You think only Democraps are worried about climate change?

    • Prove it

    • From my vantage point, the only thing Democrats are good at for climate change is funneling money to super pacs and select companies sourcing everything from China. If we went the nuclear option we may have been able to avoid the massive strain and blackouts we’re going to experience this summer that will likely kill thousands.

  • Because money talks.

  • The climate is definitely changing. But what IS the real reason?
    Fossil fuels?
    Global tilt?
Or it just happens every so often
I did hear the answer to the water issue. But I forget the stupid reason for it. Some sort of treaty or law?

    • There is supposed to be a coming pole shift which might be changing the weather too.

    • @daniela1982. The earth is supposed to be out of balance with everything that has been taken from the ground. Oil, coal, minerals, and water.

  • The Casinos in Los Vegas have more money than farmers and that's the beginning and end of it it all essentially boils down to the Almighty Dollar Lmao
