Why sex work is to be respected, but not loaning money for a profit?

This comes from a discussion I've had with a certain someone. This person used to work as a prostitute, while a couple of years ago I used to learn money at an interest.

We both left our old professions behind, but a big contention between us is that she considers her former work as respectable, while my own was "iffy". I don't agree - I was no loan shark, I never hurt anybody and most people walked out happy from our deals.

I don't agree with the double standard here - if sex work is to be respected, then even lending money to folks who needed it should, both in a social way, and in a political way.

  • I don't do not like sex for money most people that do that are bad and have been hurt or just want easy money. if you spend time with someone for money it ok. Both people are being used. I had sex with someone for money till I stop and lie to her. she use me for money and I use for sex. But I want her to be my girlfriend but that not what she is. I could told her I did not like doing it. I could stop be for I lie to her then we still be friends. She need money for her kids I don't know why she dose it or why she dose not get a normal job or help from the dads of the kids or money from the government. I regret it. If the government made it ok they have make sure they are not on drugs and are not sex slaves or robing people., that they are ddf and do not have lice. they have to be fair in how much per HR and they have to pay tax. I see it as wrong and she gave me lice or crabs. I almost had a son with her. I don't know how to help anymore as she dose not seem to want it. The only thing I can do is give her more money or forget about her. I do not want her to sell her body just her time. I wish some would help her. Sex work get respected BC they are seen as poor girl in a bad life trying to get out some time they get it and sometime they do not., Sometime they are seen as peple just trying to live life off there look and they like sugar baby , gold digger , and ring girls , cam girl and cat fishing. loaning money for a profit is respected as long as the person not a shark and the person get the money is not leaching off them for it. they are both seen as people that want easy money and do not want to work hard but sex work do work sometime and sometime the people that take loads do not they just want money but sometime they do. Some time the sex work just take the money and run. I be more happy if this happen to me it be better than sleeping with her. IF any one can help the girl I was with or help me on here that be nice. I just want her get a job and sleep with people cause she want to. I want her get help for the money for her kids and get out of a bad life befor someone hurt her or something I don't know. The cop do not do anything.

  • In the US, there are many laws which regulate lending institutions, and there are limits in the interest rates which can be charged. As long as you have complied with those laws and have not made misrepresentations or concealed facts from borrowers, then you were engaged in a legitimate profession.

SOME people think that prostitution should be a respected profession because that attitude is an extension of a progressive/liberal belief that veryone should be able to do whatever they want without suffering any consequences of their behavior. According to the progressives/liberals, EVERYTHING should be respected (except conservatives or anyone else who disagrees with them.)

For most of us, our disapproval of prostitution is an emotional response. In MY life, sex is an expression of love between a man and a woman in an exclusive relationship. Prostitution lowers sex to a mere recreational activity that means nothing more than physical pleasure and our society would be stringer if prostitution did not exist, but I also know that the "world's oldest 'profession'" is not going to disappear.

    • Thanks. You made me think about some stuff I didn’t think about when I left my opinion.

  • Sex work provides tangible benefit and is a service exchanged for money. Pay money, have a good time, leave happy.

Financial instruments like loans don't add anything of concrete value. They're only there to exploit the borrower's temporary lack of funds. And often have near-criminal interest rates.

    • @smoke-n-growls That's completely false Loans provide the most basic value. Money to people he need access to it quickly. I'm old w/ either industry but to day lending doesn't add value is bat shit crazy

    • "Financial instruments like loans don't add anything of concrete value." The vast majority of businesses, big and small, that are in the world today only exist because they were able to borrow money to get started, or to expand. How would you start a car company, or a cell phone company, or a make-up company, without loans? A good business will pay off their loan within 3-5 years - sometimes sooner than that - and then be making a significant profit - profit that would have been impossible without the loan. Seriously, to even say that reveals a complete lack of understanding of how business works - anywhere in the world. Loans have existed since before money existed, and for good reason. No one MAKES you borrow money - you have to CHOOSE to borrow it, and you do so when you believe that it's to your advantage to do so, despite the costs of interest and fees. It's a transaction of mutual benefit, unless the borrower is foolish and impulsive - and that's not the fault of the lender. Of course, I'm not defending FRAUDULANT loans - that's a completely different thing.

    • @MrOracle Honestly I dont like to insult people but unless your joking that's the dumbest statement I've ever seen. Loans and the lending business is essentially the backbone of the world. You do realize w/out the ability to lend people wouldn't be able to buy homes, start businesse, or complete infrastructure projects and that's just the basic form of loans. I understand you feel the need to earn points w/ this random chick but you couldn't make that statement in public w/ a straight face w/out being laughed at or just considered retarded. I'm not even sure why u took the time to write that, but to say money doesn't provide concrete value is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard in my life. Go to any bank in the world and ask them what happens to their business w/out the ability to loan money?

  • Both professions can be conducted ethically or unethically. Both professions can involve exploitation. As long as no deception is involved and business is conducted with open and honest integrity. Both can be respectable.

I suppose one other factor is the sense of “selling out”. If a sex worker is only in it for the money and their work is not an authentic fulfilling avenue of self-expression, then it’s undignified. However, if they boldly embrace their work and have a genuine passion for it, more power to them.

It’s just an ugly thing when someone is selling their soul for greed, regardless of their profession.

  • I don't respect either industry.

  • Neither is worth respect. Taking a loan can any fool do, and lowering yourself to sell sex isn't a merit either. Respect comes from doing things that are hard and requires character. So getting through life without taking a loan is more respectable. Wouldn't say going through life without selling sex is much of a merit since that is normal.

  • That's just her opinion. Most people think the opposite. I think both are fine.

  • You both are like thieves arguing over who is more "honest".

It's no wonder you cannot see eye to eye or compromise.

  • I respect both. Sex workers are cool. So are bankers.

    • I wouldn’t be a sex worker, but that’s cause of my personality, not cause I think it’s gross or anything.

  • I sure as hell don't respect sex work. That disgusts me. I consider anyone who's ever done that permanently rotten.

    Those that "buy" it too.

  • Saying sex work pulled the trigger

  • I've lent more both to close people for no charge and clients as brokered deals for a fixed rate (they need cash but don't want to sell their jewellery so a brokered deal is better because I'll charge 10% and the pros charge 150% a year)

  • Sex work is disgusting

    • Yikes

    • Why?

    • @AndrésC64 because they fuck a guy with a disease … as long as he wearing a condom.. and has money

  • Neither industry is respected in reality.

  • Because you are a small fish. If want respect you need capability to print your own money too before you loan them.

  • I don't respect sex work.

  • I agree with you. It depends on what kind of loans you did. But even if they were predatory loans, that isn't worse than prostitution. One is preying on people's need for money. Another is preying on their sexual addiction. ... And who knows? Maybe some loan customers actually used the money to pay a sex worker.

  • Good Q. Never understood this. Besides puritan christians on sex…and well puritan christians on Jews.

  • BOTH are business transactions for services provided, and should be legal and regulated and taxed.

  • Money earned by prostitution can be given as grant or loan to a needy person, is not bad, Prostitutes are respected as human being, though their profession, some people don't like

  • I don't know what retarded liberal arts degree you got but sex work is most certainly not respected and it never should be

    • I'm not liberal in the least and I take pride in having been called a fascist, but naturally you had to go anon to make such a cowardly comment.

    • Here is some pro advice, don't hang around a women who considers sex work respectable

    • I have to hang out with everyone to give my impression as Man of the People. Be it for me, there should a wall complete with barbed wire between me and the commoners.

  • Both deserve equal respect

  • Loaning money has been the biggest business in the world since the beginning of time.
