First of all let me say, that I think myself to be quite liberal and open minded, whatever my views I think everyone deserves to be treated equally, and people should hate the action not the person. I think people are always capable of changing and becoming better people and it's never too late. I try not judge and understand as best as I can. I'll graduate as a doctor in a few years (hopefully!) and I've seen people from all walks of life, with dispositions that I cannot for the life of me understand but one thing I cannot understand is incest. Incest and it's acception. Ok I get the odd exception. I accept people suffering from OS (objectum sexualism) even though I cannot understand people who claim to be in love with objects as a person would be with another person. but what is this rise in acceptance of incest? when has his been OK? when as society been told to accept this? Why are people who find it disgusting and wrong told they are "senseless" and "robotic" and are only repeating what society has told us? Please someone explain to me why I should be understanding and accepting of incest? My limit is brothers and sisters who have lived apart, never met and suddenly fall for each other. but fathers and daughters? what is the reasoning? I'm a medic. spare me the emotional crap. give me some solid scientific basis for this. am I alone in my disgust for this growing trend and acceptance?

Well, for me we need to firstly draw a very important distinction.

1: Adult consensual incest

2: Abusive sexual assault (incest with minors)

Under no circumstances do I agree with the No. 2. That is, any incest on a minor is sexual assault and any victims of this I give my greatest sympathy to. I do, however, make a strong distinction between that and adult consensual incest.

For me, No. 1 is a 'victimless' crime that. Whilst I personally wouldn't wish for it, I can't raise objections to it after consideration.

1: Morally:

I don't see anything morally wrong with it, as it does no harm to anyone. You could argue that it does harm emotionally to their families, but what of the emotional harm to the couple you choose to break up (and at the moment, jail).

2: Birth defects:

I have read different statistics concerning the rate of birth defects from incest, however it does appear to be a higher level. However, there are many things that can cause birth defects. Smoking, for instance, whilst pregnant can increase birth defects. Should we make a law against smoking whilst pregnant? How about drinking alcohol? Taking drugs? Being over a certain age? Having known hereditary diseases in your family? What about cancer?

Hypothetically, I would decriminalise incest, and have 'genetic counselling' available to incest couples with an urge not to have children (have a donor/adopt instead). However, I don't think it should be legally enforced, because I think it creates double standards.

3: Religion:

Regardless of my personal beliefs, I support true secularism. In that sense, I don't think religion should play a role in laws.

Some people may not agree with my moral or defect reasoning. That's personal opinion, but I do feel sorry for incestuous couples that can find themselves in jail because of who they fell in love with.

The reasons why incest is often illegal and taboo are obvious. It's not beneficial to the gene pool.

A grown woman having sex with a young boy, even if it's consensual, hurts the young boy. A human male having sex with a horse hurts the horse, and there's no way of telling whether or not it's consensual.
