What's the point of circumcision?

I know it's a dumb question but I don't get it lol. Why would you go through so much pain? Is it painful? Lol I don't know.

I don't get it being religious- like surely it goes against God, like you're tampering with his creation. If he meant for it to not have the skin thing on the end then wouldn't he have just made man without it?

  • I've written quite a lecture on this here:

    WHAT IS CIRCUMCISION
    www.girlsaskguys.com/.../q1302451-um-what-exactly-is-the-circumcision-process-like-does-it-make-the

WHY IS IT DONE (and why it's all a big sham while people are desperate to try to justify mutilation rather than questioning, "hey is it really such a wise idea to slice the skin off our newborn son's genitals for no good reason?")
    www.girlsaskguys.com/.../q1311467-what-makes-you-decided-to-circumcised

Basically the claims tend to be
    - "STD transmission rate decrease" (which is true in Africa where they CAN'T USE CONDOMS, and it matters only with infected people to begin with... oh and in the USA where circumcision supposedly protects people or so they claim, the infection rates are higher than in Europe),
    - that "it's cleaner" (it takes like 10-12 seconds to wash an uncircumcised penis and you'll have no problems. Think about whether that's "difficult" compared to brushing your teeth.)
    - that "it's odd for the child to see their father's dick and it is hard to explain that it's different" (uhh... I'll just link this)

    https://www.circumstitions.com/Images/looklike.gif

    - that "people will call him names in the locker room for having an unmutilated penis" (people will call you names no matter what you do. And if another guy is so desperate to look at your dick, he's gay anyways.)
    - that "God wants you to do it because it's written in his holy book written by some random dudes many years ago" (I'll not go into that any further, but that's the least factual claim of any of these which just makes it sad how much these people tend to be the most devoted behind unnecessary mutilation)

    - that "it doesn't hurt infants at all" (well they are wrong, infants are more sensitive to pain)

    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xjkd30_infant-circumcision-injection-and-procedure_news

    - that "if you don't get it done then you'll get infections" (you can get infections either way actually, what you need is wash your dick regularly rather than once every two weeks, lol - Europe does not practice routine infant circumcision and the rates aren't higher than in the USA)

CONCLUSION: Circumcision is insane and barbaric, unnecessary mutilation.

    • haha that was great!

    • Glad you found that helpful! :D

  • Circumcision is mostly cultural in America; in other parts of the world, it is religious (2 out of 3 circ jobs are performed on Mulisms, with most of the rest being Jewish). I'm aware of the argument that “it's naturally there, so why would God be against what he put there in the first place”, but you obviously haven't read the Jewish Torah, or the writings of Mohammad where in circumcision was praised. For America, it is largely a cultural/social norm at this point, and we all know that people don't like to question those. Circumcision in America is mostly practiced on newborns (at the parent's wishes, and sometimes without the parent even knowing about it) mostly as an aesthetic choice. It is painful, as babies are just as sensitive if not more so to pain as adults, and the child cannot receive 'general' anesthesia, as this could harm the child. There are ways to numb the penis a bit, but none have proven effective at completely dulling all of the pain of the surgery. As the circ wound heals, the baby cannot be given pain medication either. Often it is cultural, such as it is usually “to make the son look like his father”, which is as stupid and impinging on the personal freedom of the child as it sounds. Yet, sadly I haven't said anything that is not factual. Any health benefits are a side note, as we don't perform routine mastectomies on little girls to avoid breast cancer. As far as stds go, condoms work 99% of the time.

  • Circumcision is an Egyptian religious practice.
It was also a mark of initiation allowing access to further levels of the society.

other points? there is none. the Greeks didn't circumcise and their health sexual health and reproduction and the average of their life span was higher in times and equal in times with Egyptians.

  • There is no point to circumcision at all. It's just done to babies by parents buying into the idea that foreskin is dirty and a hassle to clean, because they don't want to take an extra 5 seconds to clean their kid's genitals.

  • I've circumcised my sons, all five. I did it mainly because I don't like uncut and because of the fact my husband had really tight foreskin that caused a major infection in his teens so just to avoid the hassle I had it done.

    • your husband shouldn't have neglected his personal hygiene as a kid, you do need to retract the foreskin completely when you're cleaning it after all

    • Not smart momma. Bad.

    • I Had my two boys circumcised formthe same reasons. Some people will tell your husband he should have done this and that but honestly it was an unnecessary infection as this simple procedure fixes it. some people on here are way too consumed with what others do in this regard, it is a bit concerning given their fixation.

  • It's a sign of the covenant the prophet Abraham made with God. It's a reminder of a promise not to break Gods commandments. There are other reasons like sanitation but if your religious its not something you question.

    • I don't get it being religious though because surely it's not natural. Like it's going against how God made you

    • @asker If God just made all guys circumcised then it wouldn't really be showing a promise the whole point of circumcision religiously speaking is to show that you're willing to sacrifice something in your belief in God.

    • @zorro8888 oh lol. See that's why I'm asking questions, I have very limited knowledge on such topics :p

  • I look at life in a very simplified way (which a lot of people find 'complex' lol) and this is how I perceive circumcision

    1. Hygiene - For those where water to wash with etc is scarce thus being one of the most ignored areas in the body when it comes to hygiene by the generally lazy man, makes life easier & helps unhide any infections to a possible partner ;-)
    2. Smartness - Like the hymen for a girl it was perceived that a guy's foreskin will be tight and thus painful the first time. Circumcision manages helping the man not being judged ;-) :-D
    3. Medical - & more recent is for really tight foreskins like for girls whose hymen actually requires surgical penetration to facilitate her having sex
    4. Religion - Bundle either all 3 or even one into religion & even the laziest person winds up following it blindly ;-)
    5. Fact - Apart from medical reasons there is no good or bad looking in a cut or uncut penis. It's just the way we have been taught through the eons to perceive just like in medieval ages women with very large hips, bottom & fleshy were considered far more sexier so much that skinny women would loathe themselves - compare that with today ;-) hence, it's always about how the world and era teaches us :-D

  • To stop sand getting in your foreskin when you live in the desert.

God also liked collecting them, he would have people collect foreskins to appease him... F**king weirdo.

    • That is pretty much it, lol

    • @Mesonfielde I think I got down voted for calling God a weirdo... Ha!

    • That shits funny. :)

  • It was probably done originally to avoid infections in certain hot climates where access to hygiene was weak.

It first became common in the USA to make masturbation more difficult. Which wasn't very successful, but probably does explain why blowjobs rather than handjobs became a standard 'not ready for sex' move.

In those counties that had started doing it for anti-masturbation reasons it later became standard for hygiene reasons. Then more recently that view was backed of on. Still it remained and remains common for cultural reasons.

Studies have shown that mothers usually make the decision. It's likely they want their sons to look, what seems to them, normal.

As someone circed as an adult Id say their are mild benefits and drawbacks to each.

    • How did they think it would prevent masturbation?

    • @jag420 the "standard" way for uncircumcised guys to masturbate is to grab on with foreskin forward tight and pump, letting the shaft/foreskin slide, retracting as they slide towards base and sliding forward as their hand moves over the glans. Since the doctors were probably uncut and didn't really imagine madturbating any other way they figured that would slow the boys down a lot.

    • Oh ok i never knew that due to me being circumcised. I had no idea that is why it became common in North America. Interesting info, thanks

  • female Mesonfielde in the making

    • lol.

  • I read it was done so that kids associate touching their penis with pain, so they won't masturbate and save themselves for marriage. This was the real reason, why all this started. Now it's just because of tradition in some cultures/religion, and other people who believe it's cleaner (which is not true).

  • LOL... i believe they do it just in order to look those guys in p*rn videos (they are circumcised most of 'em)

  • it usually happens when the baby is near just birthed so there wouldn't be any pain to feel.

    • But what's the point of it lol?

    • it USED to be for cleanliness reasons but im not entirely sure.

    • There would definitely be pain to feel. Unless you wanna get all philosophical and say "if you cut off a piece of flesh with a scalpel and enough time has passed that the person doesn't remember it happening, did that person feel it in the moment?"

  • I have no recollection of my circumcision. Just glad that it happened.

    • Why though? Why is it better?

    • As terrible of reason as it is, I like it because it's the cultural norm here. Girls here as a whole tend to look down on uncircumcised penises. Getting laid is hard enough. Last thing you need is girl's talking about you and your (what they deem to be) nasty dick.

  • Yes! You get it! Exactly, why would God despise his own handiwork? I'm circumcised, but I wish I were intact. My understanding is that most guys in your country are intact.

    • Yeah. That's why the whole concept of circumcision is odd to me lol. It's not common here at all.

  • To make it easier to clean

    • Except even normally it takes like 10 seconds, yet I don't hear this argument about "shaving hair so you don't need to wash it with shampoo".

  • If you did it for medical/sexual reasons, it's reasonable. It's just stupidity to do it for religious reasons.

  • Asker, the question has already been answered but I just wanted to say how much I love your update about the so-called religious reasons. Bravo!

    • Haha do you agree?

    • Yup. It may have had practical reasons two thousand years ago but not any more!

  • I like the look and the hassle free washing up. I wouldn't want it any other way. i think of it like women getting hair on their legs, lips elsewhere permanatly removed. It looks better and makes life easier.

    • You would probably like being uncircumcised just as much if you hadn't been mutilated at an early age…

    • No, I really like the look and I dont what to have to think about infections. I have heard you say it only takes a short amount of time but I want to spend no time, and, I get the look that I want.

  • ask a biblical scholar.

  • apparently it's for sanitary reasons.

    • Sanity reasons?

  • Depends on who you ask. It...

    - brings you closer to god
    - relieves you from washing your junk
    - might reduce the risk of some cancers by a very miniscule fraction of a percent
    - reduces the risk of contracting HIV if you have sex with an HIV-positive woman in sub-Saharan Africa
    - "looks nicer"

There might be more. But that's what I can remember off the top of my head.

And yes, it is painful. The foreskin is essentially attached to the head of the penis at birth. It doesn't retract until way into the future. So basically you have to cut off the foreskin from the penile head. Those who say that they don't remember it doesn't give justification for it to happen in the first place. Nobody has any recollection of anything happening in the first week of life. You could break a baby's arm and 10 years later that person would say "I don't remember it happening". But you can bet that the baby felt something. It's not like the nervous system develops weeks after birth.

  • I also don't get it. I don't see the point of doing it

    • They do it because they are misinformed, and think foreskin looks "ugly" and you'll get cancer and UTI and HIV and all that crap because you have a penis. And many p*rn stars are circumcised, so people get used to the looks. I still think it looks like someone just grabbed a knife and cut off a part of the skin for no good reason and left it there for the rest of the kid's life. Oh wait, that's exactly what happened.

  • i think for hygiene purposes... well its not painful during circumcision the only pain we get is the injection of anesthesia which is like a bite from an ant... the next pain after the circumcision is removing the bandage around the penis... cultural wise in the country where i live, most guys are circumcised. in the province or rural areas where hospital is not accessible there is a traditional way of circumcising

  • It's painful but nothing we remember. And its a cultural thing and a sanitary thing.

    • Ohh I see

    • Don't forget that Europe does not practice routine infant male circumcision, and we still have lower STD rates and UTI rates and penile cancer rates. Fyi.
