Ladies, what're your periods like?

Mine are super irregular, and I can either have NO side affects (cramps, headaches etc), or terrible affects. Currently, I am having mind numbingly terrible cramps and head aches, I'm very irritable and all I want is peanut m&m's.
Ibuprofen helps but would midol help better?
Also, what can I do to help make my period more regular? I can go 2-3 months without getting my period and then I randomly do again.
do you prefer tampons, pads or the weird cups, and why?
And any other tips/facts are always welcome!

Yea I get very irritable and sad before my period, and VERY irritable and mad during it. I can never really tell when im about to get it though because my PMS can start like 3 weeks before and last the entire time or only like 1 day before.

Also, my mom and step dad are weird about the BC, they think im gonna have sex if im on it and i dont want sex, id rather do everything but that. And I've never been to a gyno before so I don't know if that plays a factor or anything

  • It seems I experience everything under the sun when I am on my period. I get cramps right in my uterus or vaginal wall. It is so painful I feel like it could be the equivalent to giving birth to a demon child or something. The pain only lasts for a day, luckily. I take Pamprin Multi-Purpose and sometimes Ibuprofren. Pamprin is more effective for me since it is caffeine free, and I switched from Midol to Pamprin because Midol gave me panic attacks and nausea due to the caffeine it contained.
I am super moody, sometimes depressed for no reason and could cry over trivial things. Very heavy the first two days (I used to wear tampons, but it resulted in infections or a terrible odor, so I switched to cotton pads that absorb well.) I will only use a tampon when I really need to on my heavy days. Pads leave me with little to no change in my PH levels and are more comfortable for me. My period can be quite irregular. Sometimes it's at the beginning of the month, in the middle, or the end of the month. I have a hard time tracking the mark.
HUNGRY. Cravings to the max. I could eat a whole pizza and want something sweet afterward. I just want it all 😂
And I'll be honest, I feel really horny when I'm on my period, more than usual. Sorry if that was TMI >﹏<

All in all, every emotion I experience is intensified.

  • Painful and messy, mostly. I don't generally have cramps, but I have really intense back pain that lasts the first couple of days. My cravings generally go back and forth between salty and sweet, but I never want something that is salty AND sweet (like chocolate covered pretzels or salted caramel [both of which I usually like]). I know my period is coming because a week before, I'm just constantly hungry. Turns out, with some women their bodies feel the need to consume more calories before the period comes as a form of preparation.

It's kind of irritating having people go, "Are you on your period?" when I get mad, because that's not how my period affects me. My mood swings tend to be more like, "everything is cute/sad/inspiring and now I'm crying," and "I really want to have babies, I'm going to spend the next few hours planning what I'll do when I'm ready."

Now that I'm on birth control, I don't have them very often (maybe one every three months). My first two after I started birth control were completely bizarre though.

  • Midol works better and faster for me. Don't eat it on an empty stomach though, just eat anything with it. Take it the first hint of your period coming on.

As for your periods being irregular, have you ever brought this up to a doctor? I remember you making posts about mental illness awareness, is that something you deal with on a regular basis and take meds for too? Mental illness can cause irregular menstrual periods as can medications, hormonal imbalances, and certain female conditions. It's worth talking to a doctor. If there's something underlying, that will be your best option to make your time of the month a more reasonable experience.

I'm a med student so you can ask me any questions if you want.

    • Never been to a gyno or a doctor about my periods. And no but I need to.

    • Your pediatrician is a fine person to talk to as well. Menstrual irregularity is quite common and you're also very young so it could be a variation of normal and temporary.

    • I don't even know if i have a pediatrician

  • They're regular, but I get forgetful and busy and hate being caught off guard, so I have an app that tracks it for me and gives me a head's up lol.

I don't really get cramps, headaches, or mood swings. Some cravings and fatigue, but nothing major. It's just an annoying thing to deal with. I sympathize with girls who have harsher symptoms, though. My best friend has awful cramps and her mood can be all over the place for the first few days, so I get it.

I definitely prefer tampons. Pads are uncomfortable and clunky to me.

    • Oh, about what you can do to make it more regular - getting on birth control pills can help regulate your cycle and reduce negative effects. Also, Midol or Advil can help with cramps and headaches.

  • Extremely heavy for a couple of days and then light for about 2 days, usually almost clear for almost a day and then it comes back slightly heavy for half a day and then finishes.

In terms of cramps, they're almost unbearable the first two days when it's super heavy, so bad at times that I feel nauseous.

Mood wise I get really sad for a few days before it begins and stay that way through the first couple days.

I use menstrual cups on my heavy days and I got liners on the others.

    • *light liners

  • Mine used to be bad like that. I got on the pill because of the severe irregularity where I may not get my period for two to six months. When I did, they last so long and were very heavy. Now, they come like clockwork every month, aren't too heavy, and only cause cramps the day before or first day.

Try Midol. See if it helps you.

  • Mine last between 3-5 days. The first day is the worst. It's usually always a heavy flow. I get cramps, back pains, dizzy spells. I can barely stand up. I can barely sit down. I feel bloated. I cry about everything and nothing.

  • Painful

  • Before birth control i missed it all the time, or had it more than once a month. And it was always ridiculous pain, nausea and vomiting. Always.

Now, it comes exactly the same time every pack, and i dont cramp hardly at all.
Lately the waves of nausea have been back though unfortunately

    • Try ginger root and amazon has a herbal tea called healthy menstrual cycle. I was on pill for ten years and went off because of long term side effects I didn't like. I Googled it and do herbal stuff and watch my died. Low red meat and get lots of calcium with magnesium.

  • Week before my period i am a bitch. First day or two kinda sucks. The rest of my period week is completely fine and i am actually nice.

  • God those pictures crack me up. XD

Mine tries hard to punish me for putting an IUD inside it. Well it can throw all the hissy fits it wants because that sucker isn't coming out until the next time I have to chance it! XD

    • I saw IED and I wanted to know why you shoved an IED in your vagina

    • @FallOutBoy2001 XD

  • Mine are regular, starting around the 16th & going 4-5 days. Some months I have cramps of differing degrees. Ibuprofen & Midol help. Sex makes me feel a lot better, & Scott is VERY accommodating in this regard.

I don't know how long you've been menstruating but I know periods can be irregular when you first start having them. As time goes by they settle into a more regular pattern. Have you discussed your concerns with your gynecologist?

    • I have had them for about 4 years, and I've never been to a gyno before but my mom is setting up an appt. for me

  • Are you on birth control pills? Are you overweight? Are you athletic and run? Those three questions need to be answered honestly in order to ascertain why your periods are irregular. Minor like clockwork and I used tampons. I started with tampons and have no problem. Why switch? If it ain't broke don't fix it Occasionally I get back pain. I think midol is crap. I use aleve.

    • No, No and No but I do do exercises.

  • Mine are actually pretty regular, I think? Like sometimes they've been late but generally it's within a day or so of when I expected it and it lasts roughly the same amount of time. I get pretty bad PMS in the form of cramping and headaches and then I get really bad cramps during the actual period and my chest gets really tender and sore. I get really dizzy and weak sometimes too, like I've had to be helped up the stairs and put to bed before because it was like I physically couldn't move. I've given up on any medication, none of it helped, so I can't advise you on that :/ I also prefer pads. I'm really not comfortable with tampons or the cups. Pads suck too because I get a rash every single time without fail, they just irritate my skin but I bought a pair of those period panty things to wear on the night so I get a couple of hours reprieve from pads which has been awesome <3

    • Try herbal stuff. Healthy menstrual cycle tea from amazon. Herbal stuff sometimes works better than actual meds. Google it.

    • @ladymcbeth Thanks, I'll check it out! <3

    • Np. I hate to see anyone in needless pain or suffering. I'm an advid Google person anyways. Sometimes doctors are too quick to put out prescriptions with sometimes worse side effects.

  • Mine has been pretty regular lately but sometimes (for some unknown reason) it suddenly becomes unregular. I have also missed my period for 2-3 months before and I know that could happen if you're going through stress.

I do get cramps too (usually only on day 1 and 2) and they can get really bad. I take midol for it, although regular painkillers like ibuprofen has helped me too whenever I ran out of midol. I have a friend who swears by Pamprin; she gets horrible cramps that she sometimes has to be taken to the ER.

As for moods, I'm usually alright but there have been times (like yesterday, for instance, cos my period just came) where I get super blue and just feel super emotional and irritable. I do get migraines too... Sometimes during PMS and sometimes during my period.

And I've only used pads just cos I've been used to it.

Yea, I can so relate to what you wrote. /hugs

  • Had to get on BC in 10th grade because mine were all over the place. It was a life saver, but I'm still a mega bitch a few days before and the first day or so after it starts. 😈

  • My periods used to be really painful and i bleed a lot and i was supposed to go on birth control at 11 but since long usage of birth can leave you infertile my mom opted out. Now, sometimes they are heavy sometimes they aren't i do cramp a lot but mostly i just feel like i have a bad flu and im always nausea and i get body aches real bad. BUT its not near as bad as when i was a kid and would leak through all my clothes and onto my seat in school that was so embarrassing. i only miss my period when im stressed, other than that its regular.

  • on the pill they are pretty chill... occasional light cramping, with mildly tender breasts, and some headaches, super big mood swings though. Off the pill it is living hell

    • Yep, mine's that way too. When on the pill, it's regular and I don't even get cramps even though on a heavy flow. But off the pill is a whole different thing altogether. Damn hormones!!!

  • Regular.
I feel uncomfortable only first day of it. Then i feel very comfortable and it doesn't affect me that much. Just i want to watch good movies that time.

  • Thankfully mine aren't that bad. The cramps can be excruciating around day two but I've never had heavy bleeding or felt really sick.

  • The only way I've found to make mine regular is birth control. I would go so long as 6 months without having it and then I had it for 3 months straight.

  • I don't experience pain from them, but I have it every other month for about 4/5 days.

  • being mean spirited right beforehand, boobies ache then suprise! it's there. no cramps or anything, i'm blessed with a cooperative uterus. i prefer pads and they're pretty regular ever since i stopped taking bc cuz who's getting laid? not me lmfao
