  • The hymen is a thin piece of tissue/membrane that partly or completely covers the opening of the vagina. However, not every baby girl is born with a hymen. Some have it and some don't, so it's difficult to know whether a young woman had one in the first place! link

Contrary to popular belief, having a broken hymen is not necessarily a sign that a woman has lost her virginity (i.e. had vaginal sex). The hymen can be damaged or broken in other ways, for example by playing sports, such as gymnastics, using tampons, inserting fingers into the vagina while masturbating, having pelvic examinations and through horse riding or riding a bike (things that involve straddling). There can be some bleeding when the hymen is broken, but this is not always the case. So it could be that your hymen, if you had one to begin, with could have been broken through your gymnastics and sport.

I would recommend you take your time when you have sex for the first time to make sure you are comfortable. I would also suggest you use a condom to help prevent any unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. You can use a water-based lubricant, which you can apply to the outside of the condom once it has been placed correctly over the erect penis. The lubricant can help make insertion of the penis into the vagina as comfortable possible. You can buy water-based lubricants over the counter at your local pharmacy.

  • I'd like to contradict what the other girls have said so far. It doesn't have to hurt; my first time didn't hurt at all.

The fact that you were able to slip your finger in doesn't mean anything. Many people think the hymen is something that is "blocking" the vagina and the guy pushes through the barricade the first time he enters you, but it's actually only a thin structure on the side of the vaginal walls.

  • it will still hurt. its basically like working muscles that you have never really used before. I was so sore the next day that I could barely sit. but I don't mean to scare you. luckily without the hymen there won't be any bleeding, that was my case as well. the pain is defintitely tolerable though, so don't worry about that, you are just gonna be sore the next day.

    • Thank you

    • Oh yeah and I'm not to scared I guess I asked for it I just don't like pain

  • You may have a partial. No girl who has a period is completely closed, but it may still be together around the edges. If your first is a "big gun" it may rip a bit. You can fix this yourself by using multiple (2 or 3) fingers in masturbation where you go inside. You can control how much soreness you cause and you will open up as far as you need..

    • Oh goodness OK I'm gunna try that. I don't like pain very much

    • It does not matter if you have one or not. It depends on size, yours and his. My first time was with a guy who had a very small umm tool.. lol.. so it didn't hurt at all.. (it didn't feel good either) but the second guy I had sex with was a bit bigger and it hurt.. so its just up to size..

    • I did the same in my teens before I actually did it. went in with fingers and >>> thinking the guy will be way bigger. amazingly it felt the same. virgins know your body.

  • Yes it will still hurt because of the stretching of the vaginal walls if you are tight and have never masturbated before. However, it really just depends. For some girls it hurts a lot more than others. But if you have never had something up there then it probably will hurt to some extent.

  • your hymen is wayyyyy in there, it's not RIGHT THERE once you put your finger in. it might be gone from a tampon or something.

but for your first time, yes it's going to hurt.

  • It depends. It was uncomfortable at first not painful. So it might not hurt you. Your hymen might still be there though.
