  • Dysmenorrhoea is the official term for menstrual cramps, but they are also referred to as period pains.

They are caused when the muscular wall of the uterus contracts, caused it to push against blood vessels - cutting off the oxygen supply to the womb.

Dysmenorrhoea varies from person to person. In general, it manifests itself as an aching feeling in the lower abdomen, lower back, hips and thighs. For some, it can develop into contraction-like spasms. For others it is felt as a dull constant pain.

Severe cramps can also cause vomiting and loose stools.

This feeling can last up to three days after menstruation begins. But, cramps often lessen as a woman ages, and can stop completely after she gives birth.

Pain killers such as aspirin and paracatemol can be used to tackle the discomfort. Placing a warm hot water bottle over the painful area or taking a warm bath can also be soothing for those with mild symptoms.

Gently massaging the lower back and abdomen also works for some people.

Avoiding foods that contain caffeine and salt, as well as alcohol and smoking.

Overall, exercising regularly lessens the risk of menstrual cramps.

But for those who want to cut the chance of pain with medication, doctors can prescribe oral contraceptives.

    Hope it helps. 😊

    • I knew all that already, I'm just doing a survey assignment and want to find the ratio of women that experience them or not

It is one of the most common gynaecologic complaints in young women, affecting approximately 40 – 70% of women of reproductive age, with 10% of women describing severe symptoms. The true incidence is however difficult to establish due to inconsistent definition.

  • No but every month I get to hear all about them. If I felt sorry for myself 36 days out of the year nothing would ever get done.

  • First day ALWAYS hurts like crap. I remember once it started while I was at school and I had to stay in the toilet for like 3 hours straight. The toilet lights were kinda like the sensory kind so since I was the only one there and my ass was sat silent and still on the toilet bowl, the lights would close by itself - pitch black. And I remember I would be in the ratchet position where I just walked out the door with a naked button and stomping on the floor so my movements could be detected them lights flicker again to life 😩

    • Naked bottom* (because I couldn't care less)

  • I never had any until I got skyla.. I cramped pretty bad the week before I got my period.. that being said my period has actually tapered off in the past year so I only cramp for about a day.. the first time I got it put in.. i had sex two weeks after and sex was great but 20 minutes later I thought my uterus was gonna fall out.. lol that being said I've never felt pain like that again and it's my favorite bc.

  • I've never experienced pain, mood swings, cravings, bloating, or any other changes. If it wasn't for the actual period, I wouldn't even know I was on my period.
Maybe I'm an oddity though... My period is very light and last only 3-4 days. I also started puberty quite late (~16 years).

  • I only have period cramps the first day I get my period and the day after that. Sometimes it hurts so much that I can't even walk so I need to take Tylenol to relieve the pain and just lie down with a pillow pressed on my stomach. Sometimes, it isn't that bad.
