CDC releases new youth risk behavior study: Do the results surprise you?

CDC Youth Risk Behavior Study

What do you think of the changes in the past ten years?

I'm a little worried about a decline in condom use.

  • "The percentage of students
who used effective hormonal birth control increased
    significantly from 2013 through 2017."

"The percentage of students who had
had sex with four or more partners
decreased significantly from 2007 through 2017."

    Seems fine to me.
The trend suggests students are moving away from whoring around, which explains less use of condoms and higher use of hormonal contraception.
Honestly, condoms are a terrible solution, the less people use them, the better.

    • The decline in condom us is that a smaller percentage of people use them. I am not looking at raw numbers as in a smaller number of people use them. I'm looking at the overall percentage of sexually active teens, and a smaller percent are using them. They may lessen the sensations of sex, but they save lives, so calling them a terrible solution when the other solution is rigorous testing and abstinence (which doesn't work) is asinine.

    • Smaller percent of people are using condoms because more people are using hormonal contraceptives instead. And since people are also having less sexual partners, it suggests that they are being more responsible and simply don't need to use condoms in the first place.

    • Except it's only a perceived benefit. Diseases are still getting transmitted.

  • Nothing on there surprises me, except the drug usage was lower than I would have expected.

I've learned from experience though that you have to be careful with CDC information. They tend to have a bias and do a poor job of presenting data. If you use it, you really need to dig into it more. If you simply take it at face value it can be misleading.

  • Yes me too. Now that i know so much of the different condoms out there there is. I difinently can't use any of it medical reasons. But most of the whole nation can, but it isn't use very often. But you have a point its a real concern for younger individuals... ... we can only hope that those who use them know they are smarter, than those who dont aren't as smart as they think they are. Thanks for posting this question. 😊

    • Didn't know there are medical reasons to not use them

    • @halfbowsey Some people are sensitive to latex so cannot use standard condoms. Condoms made of plastic materials are available, but sometimes hard to find in stores.

    • Thanks for the MHO!!

  • Just sleep with people who don't have stds.. then you don't need condoms.

There are other methods to prevent babies.

Why would I have sex with a man who I think can give me stds? Condoms can't protect from things like hepatitis... or how about certain stds don't need direct intercourse

    • Condoms are great at preventing the Spread of Hepatitis C. You're right, certain STDs can be spread without penile/vaginal intercourse, but condoms are still helpful. How do you, personally, determine that your partners have no STDs? Are you using the method of testing at the onset of the relationship, neither partner having sex at all for 90 days then re-testing?

    • Yes we test before we have sex. Personally I would never sex with someone just like that, I always worry about stds and babies. That's why young people need to re-evaluate their sex lives and ask themselves is it really necessary to have sex so easily without precautions and testing each other.

    • Thanks for MHO :)

  • Mrs. MileCake... did you just give me a 91 page booklet to read? It is way too early in the morning for this..😴😴

    • Is actually not that much to read

  • A decline in condom use does not have to be a bad thing. Most people I know don't use condoms since they use other types of contraception.

    • Except other contraception doesn't help prevent the spread of HPV and other STIs. The rates of disease transmission are up already because of how many people keep their genitals shaved.

  • This is rather weird since basically from what i've heard from every single other study is that the condom use has been rising but I don't know. There's also a 20% discrepancy between male and female condom usage, which is odd. This might be due to the rise in same sex female interactions actually.

  • Well, it's not surprising since we've always been focused on sex for awhile, and without condoms, sex would feel better for people.

  • It's good that we're mostly doing better. It's problematic that condom use has dropped, although it appears to be coupled with increased hormonal birth control usage, so it may be good to remind kids that hormonal BC does not prevent the spread of STDs.

  • Of course, people are going to be stupid and not wear protection; I'm not surprised at all by this. Like G-Eazy said, "Why do people do things that be bad for 'em?"

  • Not surprising. Apparently the popular kids in seventh grade have given blowjobs. That’s just how far it’s gone in my school and we’re a smart have to apply to school so just imagining what the dumb ones do...

  • I didn't read it fully, I glanced at it. It's honestly surprising how it is declining with the amount teenagers are having sex, I thought it would increase. The condom part didn't surprise me, a lot of the people I use to go to school with have had children in the past several years.

  • I think it shows progress is being made on several fronts and more needs to be done. With respect to condom use, considering that the number who are sexually active or have had multiple sexual partners dropped, the percentage increase in non-use of condoms may not actually translate to an increase in raw numbers

  • Not surprising, knowing my generation

  • Increasing mental health and suicide rates doesn't surprise me

    • Very sad though. I hope awareness helps us make more resources available to young people for mental health.

  • Nope we’re all going to die anyway

  • I did t read the study (on mobile now) but wasn't the amount ok them having sex also on a decline anyway. Is the lack of use just due to just that?

  • what's wrong with a decline in condom use? pulling out is super safe right? xD

  • Young people... they just keep doing shit

  • Bad news.

  • Nothing surprises me. Including this. The results are disappointing, but not unexpected.

  • The high risk substance abuse I find hard to believe Especially with the epidemic right now and what I saw in high school when I graduated in 2014. Kids are probably scared to say they’ve used before but that gives false hope to me.

  • if anything i think it has increased
