Why are condoms so expensive?

Of course condoms are handed out for free at events and at *certain* sexual health clinics, but supermarkets, drug stores and pharmacies sell them at about €1 each. This is despite the fact that condoms are typically made from inexpensive materials like latex, and the process for making them is well defined and scaleable. And a 30 day supply of the ill, a partial substitute, costs a minuscule fraction of the price of 12 condoms...

So why are condoms so damn pricey? And why does nobody complain?

  • It's the convenience of them.
This day and age, majority of sexually active teens and adults are involved in most sexual acts that would require quick protection.
The pill only protects (certain %) against pregnancy and not many STD/STI that could be prevented with a condom.
Also the luxury of having sex with different partners and how often you may need a condom at any given notice or the time is calling for one (supply and demand).
Just like cigarettes, if you can't afford to supply yourself at whatever the cost of a pack might be, then maybe you shouldn't be smoking then.
So if you can't afford proper protection when sleeping with a non serious partner, then chances are you probably aren't meant too.

But hey... you still have your hand, internet porn, and your imagination. :)

    • I get vending machines in nightclubs being expensive. I don't get supermarkets selling them for €1 each. This stinks of retail price maintenance...

  • This is why people get pregnant because they cannot affored condoms because of the price

    • I mean a baby is more expensive.

    • @TacoFamine yes they will be

    • @TacoFamine This is a classic poverty trap problem.

  • companies just want to take advantage of whoever's having sex.

    • Would you rather have all condoms be free? Who would make condoms then? Currently they only make a one or two cent profit per box sold.

  • If you only buy one condom you aren't getting laid much. Then I would say 1 euro would be worth. But if it's common place for you then you will need more, thus making the price per item lower as it's cheaper for them to make more in 1 box then to make one box with 1 in there. You gotta realize that all boxes incur about the same cost to have people place them on the shelves. Ship them, etc... So all of that extra work that's required to get that box there is in the price. It's something like a box of condoms costs 0.80+.20x to make and stock. Where x is the numbers of condoms. And 0.8 is the shipping and stocking price.

    • I'm basing this on a 12 pack of condoms costing €12-13. If condoms are sold to the end consumer in packs of 12, then consumers can't achieve economies of scale as you have described.

    • You do know that condom manufacturers only make one or two cents per box sold right?

    • So where are the costs added on? Why are condoms so damn expensive?

  • Because they can be and one doller now saves you $50 000/ year later it sounds like a good investment just remember your litterly beating the rest of your life on this thing do you really want it made as cheap as possible

    • Who can spend 50k/year on a kid? Try more like 10k to 15k

    • Clearly you don't make enough if that all they asked for

  • Go online and order them. I buy packs of 25 for $8 delivered.

    • Last time I bought cheap condoms online, 5 of them burst in a row causing my ex and I to have a pregnancy scare. Durex responded by offering us even more condoms for free, which we didn't use because we opted for the pill as a more reliable contraceptive.

    • Wow, I have never had that happen.

  • Cos the ones you pay for are a luxury

    • I buy what's available in my local supermarkets and pharmacies. :(

    • Yeah but what I'm saying is that you have the option of free condoms so they overcharge for the paid ones

  • Supply and demand. As you said, there are free options, as long as those exist, no reason to complain.

    • Nope. There are free options for *certain* segments of the population - i. e. LGBT people who go to specific sexual health clinics, people attending music festivals and students who go colleges where free condoms are provided. For people who aren't students, aren't LGBT and in need of STI checks and don't go regularly to music festivals condoms cost a stupid amount of money.

    • There are clinics around here that do not fit those requirements, and literally have a barrel of condoms in the lobby.
