How effective is using the unprotected "pulling out" method of birth control?

Everyone says there's still a high risk of getting pregnant. I was in a 3 year relationship and my boyfriend NEVER used a condom. We had lots of sex LOTS. I'm worried now since I never got pregnant that maybe I'm just infertile or maybe he was. I didn't want to get pregnant but I was young and just let him pull out every time since it was obviously working. Now that I'm older I don't see how I didn't get pregnant. Does pulling out work for any one else or should I have gotten pregnant if there's nothing wrong with me?

  • I have solely relied on and found the pullout method very effective in my previous relationships. Not once did my exGFs have any pregnancy scares. I do know my body well and know exactly the right time to pullout without having any accidents (years of practice using withdrawal). I always make sure to urinate straight after ejaculating to flush out any leftover sperm in my penis/urethra so there won't be any in my precum during the next round of sex ;-)

Pulling out should be taken more seriously as well as being considered as a viable method of birth control :-)

  • I've had a LOT of sex in my lifetime and I've almost always used the pull out method. I've never had a problem that I got told about. However, I know a lot of guys that have tried the same and failed. Not all guys can control themselves as well as others.

  • It can work sometimes but its not completely reliable. Also the effectiveness goes down after the first time because some sperm can remain in the guys penis so when you go again, the precum has sperm in it from the previous time which will and can get you pregnant. Every girl is different though. Some girls get pregnant more easily then others. I know girls who had unprotected sex for years and were trying to get pregnant and it took years for them to conceive. Others can get pregnant after just one time.

  • My boyfriend and I have always used this method and we have never had any problems. We have been together a long time as well. However I do believe that it does depend on the guys control. Obviously I would definitely not try this out with a random hook up or anything crazy like that.

It has also crossed my mind about being infertile but I think the method we use is effective for us personally. I guess we will see if we can have kids when we actually try to.

    • Thanks. Sounds like my boyfriend and I. I want it to work when we want kids lol

  • "Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 4 will become pregnant each year if they always do it correctly.

Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 27 will become pregnant each year if they don't always do it correctly."

  • I'm sure it works for some people, but that's not a risk I can afford to take. One of the reasons I haven't had sex with my boyfriend is because an accidental pregnancy would literally ruin my life.

If it worked for you, that's great. I also think it would work best in a monogamous relationship where you don't have to worry about stds and such :P I'm sure once you master the technique it works well; just like any pregnancy prevention, it only works if you're doing it right.

  • It has a high rate of failure statistically but there are extremes both way on every spectrum.

  • Ever heard the phrase "pull-out baby"? That's how well it works.

  • Short answer not very but even if the there was a 90% chance it means there's would be a 10% chance that everey time you have sex you won't get pregnant so maybe you just got lucky

  • The pullout method works for me every time it has never failed for me but you have got to know how to do it. And if you are on birth control plus the pullout method if 100% safe I say

    • I'm wasn't on any birth control. So I guess you have to have good timing and it works.

    • Yea good timing is the key player and its better to pull out early than to stay in longer

  • Are any guys surprised by the number of girls that seem to think this is an o.k. method?

    • I hate the way condoms feel.

    • Me too/agree -- just surprised since consequences usually do not rest directly on us guys.

  • 50% of the time, it works EVERY time!

    • I am sorry, I accidentally disagreed with that answer. Sorry

    • LOL, its ok... I thought people would like an Anchorman quote...

  • I use to think that way.

    "am I infertile?"

"is there something wrong with me?"

I was in a 3 year relationship where we used the "pull out" method all the time. It was fun, it worked...then we had the bright idea of cumming right before my period was due, and right after it was due. BAD IDEA. Found out the hard way I wasn't infertile after all these years.

  • You can get pregnant from precum. It's not that common for girls to get pregnant this way, but you CAN. Sounds to me like you were lucky, because the pull out method isn't a 100% way of preventing pregnancy.
