How to treat a UTI without a doctor?

I think I got a urinary tract infection from getting fingered, every time I pee it hurts and I keep peeing a lot of time but not a lot comes out. I can't tell if I have discharge or not... but I don't want to tell my mom in case she wonders how I got it and also she keeps calling me an expense and inconvenience so I don't want to cause more "problems" for her. What should I do?

  • Cranberry juice and water will help prevent UTIs (but not always effective), but they are not treatments. You could try it, but chances are your symptoms may persist. Since you already suspect you have a UTI, I'd suggest going to the doctor.

If you do allow it to persist and go untreated, then you could potentially end up with sepsis (dangerous inflammation throughout your body) or organ damage. Your urine is sterile, as is your bladder and urinary tract. Urine should be clear in appearance. Is yours cloudy? Cloudy urine could mean you have bacteria in the urine, and bacteria to any sterile area is detrimental. Antibiotics should be prescribed by a doctor only.

In the meantime, drink water, take Vitamin C or drink cranberry juice, avoid sexual activities, and refrain from taking baths (just shower). Also, for future references, wash your hands and your partners' hands prior to contact in or around your region. Urinate after all sexual activities.

Take care. Your health is important.

  • I got a UTI and I'm not sexually active in any way. they're really common for different reasons. drink lots of cranberry juice. but you should go to the doctor as well so they can properly treat it...it could cause serious problems down the road. and as for your mom, she'll be concerned about your health and she won't be thinking that you're a "problem" to her.

    • wth? i'm telling her what my doctor told me...

    • what YOUR doctor tells you is what he considers best for YOU. Your doctor hasn't spoken, seen or examined QA. HER doctor will tell her what's best for HER.

  • You need to go to a doctor for antibiotics. There is no other way unless you do some sort of deal with a pharmacist and they give you the antibiotics. If you do not treat it, it will turn into a kidney infection.

    • indeed. Or if you use the wrong antibiotic (one you get from a friend, a friendly pharmacist or just some that's left from another person) the UTI may become chronic or recurrent.

    • Yep.

  • DON'T TRY to do it with home medication or with medication prescribed for another person: the risk that it becomes recurrent or chronic is to great, go to a doctor.

  • I'd say go to the doctors. UTI's are very common among women for a plethora of reasons so your mum might not batt and eyelid.

  • Drink cranberry juice and lots of water, but you should get it checked out because it could be something worse and could cause serious problems

    • Side note: You should go to the doctor's because UTIs can easily be confused with other infections and such...and since UTIs are caused by bacteria your mom wouldn't necessarily know what you did...but in the mean time drink lots of fluids
